Very sad to report another death from the Stooges world.
Leee Black Childers has passed away.
He was an associate of Warhol before Tony DeFries employed him in his MainMan organisation as a photographer and all purpose organiser on Bowie's 1972 and 1973 American tours.
But it was in 1973 that his important role in the Stooges' story really begins.
The band were in a house on Torrenson Drive in the Hollywood Hills, paid for from MainMan’s seemingly bottomless coffers. Childers, as MainMan’s representative, was instructed to stay with the Stooges as a minder / chauffeur / gofer and so he lived in a separate apartment over the garage for several months in the spring of 1973. His main job was to keep Iggy clean, but this was an almost impossible task what with all the roadies, groupies and general hangers on. Leee also had to learn to swim pretty fast as Iggy would regularly fall into the pool while stoned. According to Leee the rest of the Stooges were fed up of Iggy's antics and so they would ignore Iggy floating face down and it was down to Leee, a non-swimmer, to rescue his star attraction.
This was the period when most of those rehearsal tapes were made, laying the groundwork for all the shows later in 1973 and early 1974.
So we have Leee Black Childers to thank for keeping the Stooges alive for a while!
