PostSubject: Stooges footage 1969-1973   Stooges footage 1969-1973 Icon_minitimeWed Sep 03, 2008 8:38 pm

I compiled this list of known/available Stooges footage 5-10 years ago, when I was working on the projected Stooges book. It is probably incomplete and erroneous in places. Thought I'd post it here anyway. Perhaps it can be updated and improved on. *** are incomplete things which I meant to check on or correct, but never got around to doing. I also went through all Stooges audio recordings, trying identify the diff. Whisky gigs, etc - a lot of work but great fun. And a lot of other things, as I wanted to document everything that existed w. the band (not including the 2000s comeback).

The Stooges film/video footage

There is precious little Stooges footage in circulation. The total duration of the footage listed here is barely 25 minutes. More material undoubtedly exists but it remains uncirculated. For example, it is known that the Stooges’ “Chicago Pop Festival” appearance at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, on 29 December 1969 was filmed by a team of underground Chicago filmmakers.

Much of the footage listed below has been included in documentaries on Iggy, the most important ones being Lust For Life (Dutch TV, 1986), La Rage du Vivre (French TV, 1999), Dancing In The Streets (BBC, 1999), and Behind The Music (VH1, 1999). However, most of the December 31st 1973 footage has never been shown and the (11-second) 1973 excerpt has only been included in Behind The Music.

July 1969: “Delta Pops Festival”: University Center, Community College, Delta
• 4:09 mins.
• Colour picture
• Live sound (unidentified track)
Shot by Leni Sinclair, this footage is made up of three different sequences from the concert. One sequence shows Iggy onstage, wearing brown leather trousers and a shirt. He dives onto the microphone stand. Another scene is of Iggy going out into the audience to lift up a girl. The next scene finds Iggy getting back onstage and waving goodbye to the audience. Ron Asheton is playing a Gibson Flying V guitar.

Unknown 1969 concert (1)
• 1:55 mins.
• Black and white picture
• Dubbed sound
This shows Iggy in a white t-shirt. At one point, he sits down at the edge of the stage. Another clip is of him jumping into the crowd. The sound is dubbed but it’s questionable whether it is the Stooges.

Unknown 1969 concert (2)
• 1:29 mins.
• Black and white picture
• Dubbed sound (“No Fun” from album)
This appears to be from mid-1969. It shows Iggy dancing wildly, arms in the air. At another point, he assumes a crouching position, covering his face with his hands. The film also has close-up footage of Dave Alexander and his bass guitar as well as some shots of Scott Asheton behind his drums.
The source is a 1969 US TV report on rock music. A reporter introduces the footage, saying, “Out of the protest of the Vietnam War…” The report was broadcast on *** (the date is visible in the ***).

13 June 1970: “Cincinnati Summer Pop Festival”: Crosley Field, Cincinnati
• 4:33 mins.
• Colour picture
• Live sound: “1970”/“TV Eye”
This, the most well-known live footage of the Stooges, shows Iggy’s famous walk amongst the crowd at the Cincinnati Summer Pop Festival.

8 August 1970: “Goose Lake International Music Festival”: Goose Lake Park, Jackson
• 2:19 mins.
• Colour picture
• Live sound: “1970”
The footage, which is marked “For preview only,” starts with Iggy bouncing off the floor after doing a back-bend. He dances across the stage before he starts to sing. The footage starts from the beginning of “1970.” The live sound is rather thin, however, emphasizing drums and guitar.

Unknown 1970 concert
• 0:19 mins.
• Colour picture
• Silent
This shows Iggy with silver gloves and blue jeans. Iggy is dancing amongst the crowd and does a microphone stage dive. It appears to be from later in 1970 than the Cincinnati and Goose Lake festivals since Iggy’s hair is much longer. Also, the bass player looks like Zeke Zettner (rather than Dave Alexander, who exited in August 1970), although the glimpse of him is so brief that it’s hard to tell.

Unknown 1973 concert
• 0:11 mins.
• Colour picture
• Silent
This is very brief footage of the Raw Power-era Stooges. Most likely, it is from the Detroit “comeback” show at the Ford Auditorium, 27 March 1973.

31 December 1973: Academy of Music, New York
• 9:00 mins.
• Colour picture
• Silent
This footage was shot by Ivan Kral from the seventh row, using a super 8mm camera. The footage is excellent, close and steady, focusing on Iggy but also with some shots of James Williamson. At one point, Iggy is in the crowd, very close to Kral. Short excerpts have been included in some documentaries on Iggy (and Kral), but the footage has never been shown in its entirety.

There is a little section of it featuring the "micropone stage dive" which is often shown. Its basically this:

Stooges footage 1969-1973 Microp11

Apparently there was loads more footage shot by John Sinclair's wife but it got destroyed in a house fire.

Don't know where that 1970 snippet is from. I think it was included in the VH-1.

Well if he hasn't found a buyer for it in 38 years he's probably taking it to the grave - what an asshole.

With all this extra footage that I never knew existed someone could make a mini original Stooges documentary some like the MC5 one - now wouldn't that be something!

My best guess is that the guy with the 20 minutes out of Chicago is a guy named Dirt Wheeler. Growing up in Detroit Dirt used to show his footage at flea markets and record conventions in the area, I've heard this second hand from people that have claimed to see it.
Also spoke with the people at TV56 out of Detroit recently about possible video they might have. This is the station that housed the famous Black to Comm video by the MC5. They claim that they threw out all their old video years ago because they thought there would be no use for it.
Too bad,

I found it strange that they'd just toss out footage as it could come up handy at a later date. They said they had no footage that far back though and never thought there would be any demand for it.
But then again who kept the MC5 video all these years?

originally stuff was recorded only for the purpose of editing it and then broadcasting a few days later, since video tape in the 60's was very expensive and could be rerecorded many things are lost.
also popmusic was not considered to last long!
within tv companies also people work who like music and wanna keep things.so thanks to them

I agree, that looks like Dave. I didn't have screen shots in those days to scrutinize. I have info on 2 TV performances the Stooges did in 1969 and possibly other info as well. It's all in a computer I haven't used in years, but I'll go through all the stuff to post here. Per

Does anyone know anything about:

>>>Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, on 29 December 1969 was filmed by a team of underground Chicago filmmakers. >>>

It's been verified that it was shot, but does it still exist?

Now THAT would be a find!
