I thought per might have the scoop on this, but I'll take info from any souce of course.

I'm curious about Ron and Dave's axes. I mostly see Ron in the early Stooge days weilding a Strat (he sure makes that thing sound fat!) and I don't think I've ever seen James Williamson with anything other than a Les Paul.

I'd like to know if Ron used a Strat on the first LP and Funhouse.

I'd really like to know what bass Zander played on the first two albums. I've seen him pictured with a Fender Jazz bass and a Mosrite bass. I am most interested to know what his setup was for the recording of the song "Dirt."

I mean, listen to the majestic bass on that track! It sounds like a damn organ at times. Incredible tone.

Anyone?

James Williamson, also took a strat to every show... but I don't think he ever used it onstage...

Ron used a Gibson Flying V, on "Self Titled, The Stooges" album, on "1969" "I Wanna Be Your Dog" "No Fun" "Ann"

And he used a Strat on The rest of the album.

On Funhouse He used a strat w/ marshall JMP amp, and cab w/ 10" speaker's instead of 12".. (for more drive)

... Dave Alexander On Funhouse used the Fender Jazz Bass.
On The song "Dirt" he used just the Neck pick-up on his bass.

If you want an Alexander bass sound, use a cab w/ 8, 10" speakers (Not 12") it's the only way to go.

Cheers.. hope this helped alittle !

PS - in 71 (Williamson/Ron both on guitar) Ron used a Les paul.

Cheers !

Yes, I understand !

Believe me - I have studied every little drop of information on the Asheton sound. and have read this info from various different sources. I put alotta time into doing this because I play guitar (and bass and drums) and get the ron sound well.

I remember reading in one of my old magazine's maybe "changes" from 1970. about ron's stuff as well. And also dave's bass sound.

The fact that Williamson took a strat to every show is kinda touchy-feel, not a fact exactly. But I've seen at the kingscross lond 72' show, he has his gibson onstage and next to the amp was a strat... so he obviously at least brought one to that show !

Hope this help's alittle --

I think you have it the wrong way round. I'm pretty sure Ron used a strat on the songs you mentioned ("1969", "I Wanna Be Your Dog", "No Fun", "Ann") and a Flying V on the others. He defienetly used a Flying V on "Not Right".

Nope you got it backward Smile

That distorted guitar is the Flying V.

I promise I am correct Wink

Cheers !

Stooges originally did those 4 song's I mentioned. then the record company said 4 song's wasn't enough, so they went back and did 4 more -- At this time ron was now using strat's -- so that's what he recorded those next 3 songs (Little Doll, Not Right, Real cool time) w/ strat + We will fall... which has no guitar at all of course.

Cheers !

Yeah your right JLST about Ron using a flying V, I misread the article. But "We Will Fall" DOES have guitar, it was played with a strat.

Well, yes and no.

You've definitely been informative, but now you have me jonesing for a Jazz bass again (I've been playing Precisions for years)--and I can't afford it.

I believe that Dave's Fender Jazz Bass was fretless too.

I've read several articles mentioning that Dave Alexander had a fretless bass not long before he was fired. Fender Jazz basses were quite commonly fretless.

so the first album, he used the Jazz?

I'm a wannabe bassist. It would be great to try and emulate Dave Alexander because he's the best bassist I ever heard. No doubt it would be impossible, especially for a girl Laughing but I can always dream. Of course it would be even better to try and emulate Ron Asheton on guitar, but that's even MORE impossible.

I'd trust JLTS, his covers are pretty much note perfect especially on "Dirt". Theres not the feel that Ron puts into it though but nobody except Asheton himself is able to do that. Smile

in some photos the bass that Alexander has seems to have an inordinately long neck...or am I just imagining it? I'd like to be sure which make that was!

I'm not sure, I'm guessing it would be a jazz or funk bass of some sort.
