Was wondering what are the best Stooges gigs from 73 and if any of the ones not on CD are worth picking up.

This seems to be what's out there (Thanks Dirt!) What's in green seems to be on CD (Bomp and Revenge). So I'm really interested in peoples opinions of all the other gigs.

Any Stooges recordings are worth picking up, but be aware that many shows are of terrible sound quality and many shows contain exactly the same set list, played very consistently night after night.

In fact that's what I find so interesting - on all the existing recordings from 1973/74 regardless of the sonic quality, the band consistently puts on a great and solid show. Many books / articles are fond of dwelling on the drug problems that beset the Stooges, and the later 1973/74 show are often described as shambolic drug-ridden messes, but a listen to any of the existing recordings pretty much disproves that. Whatever disasters were going on behind the scenes the Stooges seemed to be able to deliver a rock solid gig every time. That's a really professional attitude, and proves that all their hard work in rehearsing their set in the spring of 1973 really paid off. Even Iggy, who it appears was somewhat out of it at some gigs, sounds great on most of the recordings we have.

I would imagine, after 35 years, that we'll never come across tapes of any more gigs from this period, but who knows!

I for one would love to hear a recording of the gig at which Elton John turned up onstage wearing a gorilla costume and genuinely frightened a stoned Iggy who for a few moments apparently thought it was a real gorilla!

Cheers,

Richard

My first exposure to the Stooges was from a friend who had the Whisky show from 16 Sep 73 on double pink vinyl and after hearing it I went straight out and got it on CD and it's been one of my most cherished silver disks for the past 20 years. The performance is phenomenal. I think California Bleeding might just beat it 'cos it's got the live version of Johanna, but iit's close. In my view the gigs on Double Danger are good but not quite as good as these two.

So what I was really after was how people who have these CDs rate the unreleased Whisky shows and the Max's shows by comparison.

Sorry, the only record I have now is Metallic KO!

And I don't like Iggy solo stuff (except for The Idiot and Lust for Life).

And there is some footage from 1970's, on Iggy's South Bank Show (search on Youtube).

The Max's shows, sound quality issues aside, are probably my favourites from this period. There's a sense of the band still feeling their way with the material, Iggy sounds fresher than later in 1973 and they have a very supportive audience. Later, as the crowds turned more antagonistic the Stooges became more cynical, tired and wasted from haphazard touring and too many drugs. Although the later 1973 / early 1974 gigs introduced some fine new songs into the set, it's the sheer amount of vital energy at the Max's shows that convince me what a powerful band this live version of the Stooges was.

Having said that, the September Whisky gigs are pretty damn good too!

And the 1973 parts of Metallic KO also show a band firing on all cylinders - but although the 1974 final Stooges gig part of Metallic KO is fascinating (and thank god it's been preserved for history), I always find that, musically, it's not as strong as earlier performances. The numbing exhaustion is palpable, the sense that it's all falling apart is quite clear, and because of that that band don't quite hit the heights of before. They try, manfully, to give a strong performance, and they do, for the most part, succeed against the odds. But I can't hear that spark of enjoyment from the Stooges that I can hear in the summer of 1973 recordings.

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks Richard,

will try to track down the Max's shows. If got a couple of tracks from one of them on the end of the Rubber Legs CD not sure which show though.

I don't really want to buy Heavy Liquid as I have half the stuff already - have Max's ever been on stand alone cd?

I have a feeling that the extra live tracks on some versions of Rubber Legs are from one of the St Louis American Theater shows.
I don't know if either of the Max's recordings have ever been available separately - apart from as bootlegs - but I think that at the moment the Heavy Liquid box is the only place to get one of them officially. But I could be wrong...

I'm the person who recorded that song (see more details about me and this recording in this thread). I know the quality isn't very good. The sound at the show was poor and, just like the recording, you could hardly hear the vocals and the piano was VERY loud.

I recorded the entire show on cassette and later copied it to a reel to reel. I still have the original cassette but it was recorded over after I copied it to the reel. The circulating song ("Search and Destroy") is from that cassette and the only song that wasn't recorded over. But, due to the poor sound, I also recorded over the reel at some early time (way back in the 70s). An action I now greatly regret!!! I'm sure I still have the original reel but I've searched extensively through all my old reels and it seems none of the rest of the recording survives.

This was recorded in January 1974 and, according to the thread linked above, it was the 19th. I'm not certain of that exact date but I can probably verify it if I dig through some of my old memories items.

All circulating copies of my recording are sourced from a second generation dub I made for my friend, Monty Wickerham, back in the mid 80s. And who knows how many generations have been added to it as it's been traded.

A couple years ago, I made a digital copy from the master cassette. I've uploaded a wav file of it here. Hopefully, it sounds a little better than the circulating copies.

BTW, I know this thread is not a "Iggy solo" list but my friend Monty and I are also the source for the 1986 St. Andrews Hall, Detroit soundboard recording. And I am the source for the 1988 Phantasy Theater, Cleveland audience recording. I still have those master tapes. And I have sub-masters from a few other shows that Monty recorded circa 1986-90.

Thanks for all that info and especially for making the wav file of your master cassette available. Very much appreciated.
As soon as I'm home I'll be downloading that!
Any more memories about the concerts you've been to - let us have them - it's all fascinating stuff!

No other early Stooges stuff. However, I do have some low generation stuff that has turned up on CD (bootleg and legit) which sounds better than the released versions. Most notable is the WABX broadcast of the early "Raw Power" mixes. My tape sounds much better than the Bomp "Rough Power" release or any other appearances of the material (that I've heard).

I do have some Iggy solo masters from the late 1980s as well as some submasters (closely monitored and engineered copies of the actual masters) dubbed using two high-end Nakamichi CR-7A cassette decks in a studio.

If anyone is interested, I have a master uncirculated complete good quality audience recording of Alice Cooper in Toledo, Ohio December 12, 1971 ("Killer" tour) that I'll be posting soon. Folks have been after me to post it so I'll be getting to it soon. If anyone is interested, I'll drop a link here. I also have a complete alternate master of the Alice Cooper show that has appeared on a variety of bootlegs such as "Parracidal Slumbers" from Detroit at The Rooster Tail in 1970 an broadcast on WRIF. Although there is some radio interference in spots, the recording is complete and better quality than the bootlegs which are incomplete and generally lower quality.

Here's my list. The list is slightly out of date. I have a few additional items not yet listed.

If Iggy's voice had been more upfront in the mix this Toledo live would be one of my favorite takes of Search and Destroy. I like the wall of sound feel to it a lot more than Metallic KO for example.

Nice one Chazz.

Those are just short clips that I think are relatively common (i.e. seen in documentaries and I believe most if not all are or have been on YouTube). I'd have to dig out my VHSs to see exactly what they are. I haven't watched them in a LONG time.

Well... I was on my way to that show (with a recorder) but about halfway there (from Toledo) the car's engine blew and we never made it to the show. We had someone pick us up and bring us back home. Crying or Very sad

At the moment, the video input is not installed on my computer. I'll probably install it before too long and I'll try to remember the Coachella show. I'll certainly drop a note on the board when I do.

I've never heard any of the multi-gen copies. I'd be curious how it sounds.

Here's some more info on the Toledo 74 show...

First, while I can't determine the exact date, the Jan 19 date on this list cannot be correct (I've also seen other lists date it as January). I attended that show when certain personal events were occuring in my life. I found a personal document from that period which is dated Jan 12, 1974. It was easily two to three weeks after that document that I saw the show (NOT one week). You'll notice on my list, I've dated it February 1974 which is how I always remembered it and how I'm now certain is accurate. Surely, it was before the Feb 9, 1974 Michigan Palace show. So... I'm absolutely convinced it was in the first week of February and must have been around the same time they did the couple of shows in Michigan.

And for those of you who like this sort of thing (I do)...

This is a contemporary photo of The Toledo Sports Arena...
Stooges early recorded concerts Arena1

This is an inside shot of the arena. The stage was in the green area and the arrow points to where I was seated and made the recording...
Stooges early recorded concerts Arena2

This is the master cassette (you'll note that side A now says blank Crying or Very sad )...
Stooges early recorded concerts T1

I think I originally recorded over the concert with some interviews by The Who but you can see by the extra label (from some time in the 80s) at least I recorded over it with Iggy stuff. Only "Search and Destroy" survives on the cassette (which is what I uploaded).
Stooges early recorded concerts T2

You can see some remnant of the original writing that says "Stooges"
Stooges early recorded concerts T3

That cassette was recorded on this reel. The Stooges' portion was actually cut from the reel. I wouldn't have thrown it away so I still have that segment of tape somewhere although I presume it has been recorded over. As I've mentioned, I've searched for it with no success. However, I think I will give one last definitive check of all my old reels to see if anything else might still survive.
Stooges early recorded concerts R1

I had written the set list on the tape box in the area designated by the arrow in the photo above. That area was blackened out some time in the 80s. This is a close up, enhanced image...
Stooges early recorded concerts R2

I can determine the set was...

1. Raw Power
2. Rich Bitch
3. Heavy Liquid
4. Gimme Danger
5. unknown
6. unknown
7. unknown
8. Search and Destroy (listed at the top right of the box)

If you can see it you might note that "Heavy Liquid" is listed as "Hard Liqeuer". This was a misreference I got from some magazine at the time. One of the unknown songs is "Head On". I didn't know the title at the time but once I got "Metallic KO", I recognized it as the song on my tape.

Finally, here's another poor photo from that show...

Chazz,

I will double check the Jan. 19, 1974 date again. If it's wrong it will be corrected.
I will also check the fall 1970 date in Toledo and find it. But there's something odd about that fall 1970 date. I'm fairly sure Iggy didn't get that leopard head coat - the one on Raw Power - until he went to England in 1972. Additionally he didn't cover himself in silver glitter until they reformed in April of 1971. Two of the photos of him that you claim were from Toledo were also taken by Jim Parrett (Denim Delinquent fame) at the Whiskey A Go Go after the Stooges broke up.

As I mentioned, I'm almost certain it was not Jan 19. The personal events I refer to in my last post are this... on Dec 12, 1973 I was busted for drugs. For a month, I was held in juvenile detention (I was 16). In lieu of jail, my parents agreed to send me to St. Charles Hospital (Toledo) drug rehab. I went to St. Charles on Jan 12, 1974. I still have the document. I was there at least two weeks but I'm certain it was more like three weeks. At which time I was allowed a furlough home for the weekend and given special permission to attend a concert (The Stooges concert). Looking at a 1974 calender, I would suspect it was Fabruary 1-4. This is definently the way it occured. I hoped I still had documentation for the furlough or concert permission but all I still have is the admittance papers to St. Charles (hmm... I wonder if my local court house still has that documentation in the archives). The concert HAD to be the last week of January or the first week of February.

Perhaps Jan 19 was the original date for a postponed show and documentation for that date still exists somewhere and doesn't show a postponement and it was rescheduled for a date 2-3 weeks later.

I have no momentos left that can confirm (or even narrow) the 1970 date. My memory has always been that I was thirteen years old (on April 14, 1970) and I had recently got "Funhouse" as a new album (when was it released?).

The April 1971 date is very possible. I remember warmer weather (Spring?) and I didn't turn fourteen until April 14, 1971. Perhaps the show was in early April 1971.

My memory has also always told me that there were only four band members at that first show because I was surprised when I saw them the second time in early 1973 and they had an additional guitarist (five members). Then I saw them in the summer of 1973 and the guitarist was gone and replaced with a pianist.

What date was "Raw Power" released? Because I remember my friends and I commenting that (on the back cover) Iggy had on the same leopard jacket as we had seen him wearing at the concert. Unless that wasn't Iggy that we saw at the concert but we were all certain it was.

I got all three of those pics from a web site that appears to no longer exist (www.iggy-stooge.com). They were labeled as being the Toledo show. I do remember Iggy and James were wearing the same outfits as in the pic. So, I presumed the info was accurate.
