| There seems to be some confusion regarding whether or not the Stooges played the Whisky in October 1973. In fact, I questioned it myself in another thread. I have since found this - The old memory just ain't what it used to be. This would also seem to mean that the dates on various cassettes are correct. Aaaah, the wonders of the Interweb thang... | |

| Just got the Heavy Liquid box in the mail and the Whisky gig CD is the show that my friend's brother recorded. I'm not sure and haven't done an A/B test yet but I think my digitized version from the original tape is better sounding. They did a great job of editing out extraneous crowd noise, etc. I can't wait to wade through this.
PS - Tower.com has the box for $45.00 / free shipping.

The CD "Live in LA 73" which claims to be from Sept 16th has similar times and between song banter to your Sept 16th tape. Although some of the extended banter is missing. But, it also includes She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills (9:53) between Heavy Liquid and Open Up and Bleed. Also Gimme Danger is moved to come after Open Up and Bleed.

I see it for $79.99. Is there another listing?
http://www.tower.com/heavy-liquid-stooges-cd/wapi/105903222 I just double checked to see what I paid and I got it for $45.99 at Tower.com 4 days ago. I must have stumbled onto a sale or a mistake or something. The same link I used now says $79.99. Damn! Sorry about the faulty info.

There's also an extra Heavy Liquid on the end of the Snapper CD, is this from a different night?

The extra Heavy Liquid is from a different night but the CD does not give a date. For live Stooges, the Snapper CD is actually quite listenable, although far from hi fi. Despite the naff cover, the CD is well presented with a small booklet of words and photos. And it is a complete show, unlike Bomp's California Bleeding CD which is a bit of a mess . I haven't heard the Revenge version. One version of it is enough.

September 1973: Whisky A-Go-Go, Los Angeles (G) 1) Raw Power (5:30) 2) Head On (8:00) 3) Gimme Danger (7:30) 4) Search And Destroy (4:25) 5) I Need Somebody (5:15) incomplete 6) Heavy Liquid (5:55) 7) Cock In My Pocket (3:20)
Open Up And Bleed (11:55) Duration: 56 mins. Comments: The recording cuts off between most songs due to the fact that the guy who recorded the set wanted to save tape to make sure he captured all the songs. Apart from the breaks between songs, this is a complete concert. A tape containing the initial 27 minutes of the show is also circulating, but it’s just a shorter version of the original recording. The date “17 October 1973” was scribbled onto the cassette by the guy who taped the show, but the date is questionable since I have no information that confirms that the Stooges played the Whisky in October 1973. According to gig listings in Los Angeles newspapers, they played there 20-24 June, 3-7 September, and 15-17 September 1973. Still, it is possible that they filled in for another act on 17 October. This tape starts with some audience noise before it’s into “Raw Power.” The audience calls out for their favourites after “Head On”: “Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell,” “No Fun,” “Gimme Danger,” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” Iggy decides to go for “Gimme Danger.” Following the song, Iggy says, “I want the house lights on the stars. House lights, house lights. No house lights, no music! Gotta be seen.” He announces “Search And Destroy” to wild audience response. After the song, he requests “water” and says, “Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. James Williamson.” There are cuts on the tape but it’s likely that he introduced all the band members. The first few seconds of “I Need Somebody” are missing. Before playing “Heavy Liquid,” Iggy says something like, “Get your drumming hand up my mike cord. C’mon mister.” He also says, “What d’you want? Blood? I’d drink anything but blood. You had enough? Sounds made by idiots, all sound and fury, signifying nothing.” He introduces “Cock In My Pocket,” “This evening’s additional selection is entitled ‘I Got My Cock In My Pocket,’ before counting in the song, “One-two, one-two-three-four.” Following the song, he says something about “another mike stand, so many mikes.” He says over the final sounds of “Open Up And Bleed,” “You can’t buy a man’s soul.”
Hey Per, I spoke with Carlton about Whisky A-Go-Go tape on his Heavy Liquid box. In your document, it is the tape (G) and it is marked as September 1973. On the box the tape is marked as 17.10.1973. He sent me this advert for the Whiskey gig. What do you think? Maybe it October?

| Yes, I agree that the "G" tape is indeed 17 October! We did not know that that was a definite Whisky gig date until seeing this ad. We thought the tape date had been mislabelled. Per | |

| I just listened to tape recorded in the Whiskey 16.09.1973 and this tape is the same as Per's tape E.
16 September 1973: Whisky A-Go-Go, Los Angeles (E) 1) Raw Power (5:05) 2) Head On (7:55) 3) Gimme Danger (7:00) 4) Search And Destroy (4:40) 5) I Need Somebody (6:00) 6) Heavy Liquid (6:00) 7) Open Up And Bleed (12:50)
I compare this tape with Snapper / Revenge editions:
Live in LA 73 1 Raw Power 2 Head On 3 Search And Destroy 4 I Need Somebody 5 New Orleans 6 She Creatures Of Hollywood Hills 7 Open Up And Bleed 8 Gimme Danger BONUS TRACK: 9 Heavy Liquid / New Orleans
On Snapper / Revenge editions are definitely incorrect order of songs. At that time, Iggy and The Stooges usually played Gimme Danger after Head On and concerts are ending with Open Up And Bleed.
My opinion is that song She Creatures Of Hollywood Hills is not from 16.09.1973. show. After Heavy Liquid (New Orleans), as Per wrote: „An announcer says, “Let’s have another big round of applause for the Stooges!” They return for an encore of Open Up And Bleed. „ On Snapper / Revenge editions that part is cut and replaced with She Creatures Of Hollywood Hills.
At the end of the concert: „The announcer returns after “Open Up And Bleed,” once again asking for a round of applause for the Stooges before mentioning some upcoming gigs at the nearby Roxy: the Temptations, Linda Ronstadt, the Crusaders, Little Richard, Genesis, Three Dog Knight, and the O’Jays...“ (Per)

| I'm sure Revenge/Snapper have the wrong order but no matter this show has some of the best versions of these songs I've heard - Head On, She Creatures, New Orleans, Open Up and Bleed were all played with such feeling that night.
Does Per's tape also cut out the between song chat?

Does Per's tape also cut out the between song chat? Tape is uncut (except for a short break between A and B sides of cass). On the tape was recorded as the band goes from the stage after the Heavy Liquid (New Orleans) and how they return for an encore (Open Up And Bleed).

There's also an extra Heavy Liquid on the end of the Snapper CD, is this from a different night? haha strangely enough, i have compared the two CDs. The Snapper version sounds a bit warmer and more natural, but also has a bit more clarity as well. Definitely the better of the two in my opinion Also, the extra Heavy Liquid is from the 9/17/73 show

| As someone who saw a Whisky show second set, I can add that the one I witnessed was short in itself, 2 of the longer songs only-- She Creatures and Bleed. This set was the only one I could get into as press (I was a poor university student at the time.) It's been documented that second sets (Whisky policy then) were sporadic, possibly dependent on what occurred right after the first set. | |
