I heard about this from Hal Cragin.

He's mentioned in Open Up and Bleed as the guy who worked with Iggy on the demos that ended up as Avenue B. THose demos were much rawer and less bland than what we had on the record... which I alwyas thought was a wasted opporunity. I'd love to hear Iggy do something raw, and stripped down, a bit more Tom Waits or Nick Cave, so we can really hear his voice.

Well, apparently he got in touch with Hal again recently and they've revived some of those ideas. I did hear their demo of Autumn Leaves which was blinding (vocals maybe needed a touch of autotune though). I thought Avenue was a great 'Culd've Been" project... maybe this will be it, this time around....

This sounds really interesting, I liked "Avenue B", I don't think it deserved the panning it got.

Iggy is severely underappreciated as an actual SINGER. I think he can pull just about anything off.

I'm interested in anything he wants to do. Smile

This morning in the Dutch national newspaper De Volkskrant: a 1/10 cultural page column with totally devastating critics
on Houellebecqs crappy film and his sligtly less crapy book 'A possibility of an Island'.
Just a favourable comment about the documentary made.
But more important is:
+ a very favourable comment about the 7 released songs for the documentary specially made by Iggy!
This all will be shown this weekend in Amsterdam.

Here you go.. very nice.. very nice.
I'm not gonna support Houellebecq and his film. no way.
But certainly wanna hear Iggy's songs!
Anybody a clue where else we can hear these songs?

Yeah. Singing with Vanessa Paradis was kinda interesting, too. Love his voice, maybe a jazzy album? Wink

This movie premiered at the Lucarno festival in Sept 2008 as I posted here and on http://iggypop.org 9.11.08 -- with a comment from Iggy's reps. Do you know of theatres where it is playing?

Documentary "Last Words"
Screened at the Locarno International Film Festival 2008 (Switzerland)

The documentary Last Words directed by Erik Lieshout, Arno Hagers and Reinier van Brummelen. Bonanza Films was in charge of the production. The film shows Michel Houellebecq while he is translating his last book ‘The Possibility of an Island’ into images. Iggy Pop, who is Houellebecq’s admirer as well as idol, made 7 songs especially for the documentary. A search for a ‘farewell without an end’ and the ‘pure fear of space’. The result of Houellebecq’s film version of the book at the festival was under its original French title 'La Possibilité d'une île.'

‘The Possibility of an Island’

Synopsis
Who, among you, deserves eternal life? Daniel is a highly successful stand-up comedian who has made a career out of playing outrageously on the prejudices of his public. But at the beginning of the twenty-first century, he has begun to detest laughter in particular and mankind in general. Despite this, Daniel is unable to stop himself believing in the possibility of love. A thousand years on, war, drought and earthquakes have decimated the earth and Daniel24 lives alone in a secure compound - his only companion, a cloned dog named Fox. Outside, the remnants of the human race roam in packs, while Daniel24 attempts to decipher his predecessor's history. In a nightmarish vision of the implosion of the modern world, he, like his predecessor attempts to fathom the meaning of love, sex, suffering and regret.
.
About the Author
Michel Houellebecq lives in County Cork, Ireland. He is the bestselling author of the Atomised, Platform and Whatever. He is also a poet, essayist and rap artist.

Editor's note: According to his rep, the 7 songs are very Sinatra-like (low voice and all). Cool. Interesting and nothing like what he's been doing.

cb here in Holland;
I read none of the commercial movie theaters wants to show it.
Even the independent Rotterdam Film Festival rejected the film.

So an poetry festival called Weerwoord is gonna show it
Here is the link:
http://www.weerwoordfestival.nl/?menuitem_id=4
They gonna show the film in De Melkweg (concert hall) in its small cinema space.

I don't think it was panned all round though was it?

I read some very good reviews.

Been meaning to dig it out again.

Re crooning...the beginning of 'I'm a Conservative' came to mind!

He does a little crooning in a lot of his songs (for instance Tiny Girls) imo.

Hey...

I heard that Iggy's forthcoming solo album "premaliners
(or something like that ) is going to be acoustic jazz record, something like " Avenue B" or " New Orleans" - "Tom Waits" - stuff.

This is my first post on this forum.
Cheers.
Nice to meet you !

Thanks Lucas! Very cool project, and Iggy is always great when he delves into this type of music. I really loved the toned-down tracks on Avenue B, and hope he continues to put forth more like it.

7 song? has it been extneded cause thats pretty short (even for early stooge standard)

although i like when artists focus on 7 - 9/10 amazing songs instead of 3 -5 amazing songs on a 15 track album, this sounds barely album-ish, and hence un-tour-able?
