Tornado Turner replaced James Williamson for one or two dates in the Spring of 1973. James had been told to leave the Stooges by the MainMan management team - for some reason Tony Defries couldn't stand James - and seemingly fed up with all the shit, James actually left.
Turner was suggested as a replacement by Kim Fowley (I think) but his apparently flashy style was unsuited to the Stooges.
In any case, Iggy managed to get MainMan to terminate their contract shortly afterwards by playing with himself live on the radio!
So James was welcomed back. And when Bob Sheff decided to relinquish the piano stool shortly afterwards, James brought in Scott Thurston, who he had been playing with during his time off from the Stooges.
As far as I know there are no recordings available with Turner in the Stooges.
Cheers,
Richard

Yes, Fowley does claim to have suggested Warren Klein; he had produced his previous band, I think. But I don't think it was that Klein was flash - he was just too conventional and bluesy.

He plays with Peter Case - Peter did forward an email for me but Warrne didn't reply - and also played on Beck's Mutations.

Very interesting story!

But why the hell Warren "Tornado Turner" Klein is never regarded as a Stooges member?
I mean, when the band was inducted in the RockNRoll Hall of Fame, James Williamson gave the names of every guys who play with The Stooges, even Bob Sheff, except for Warren Klein. Why?

Didn't he only stand in for 1 gig? That doesn't really make him a Stooge in my mind. I think Iggy covered for Dennis Thompson on drums a couple of times in the early days but that doesn't make him a member of the MC5.

According to Paul Trynka's "Open Up And Bleed", "he was hurriedly enlisted into the Stooges" to replace James Williamson, and even if he played only one gig with them, to me this is enough to regard him as a Stooge.

After all, Dan Peters is considered as a former member of Nirvana, and he only played one gig too!

And if Williamson dies, Iggy could continue The Stooges with Warren Klein! Laughing

Woah Woah there...one night 38 years ago doesn't exactly make him a Stooges torch bearer, I'd be surprised if the guy can even remember the occassion at this point.

Up!

Is there anybody here who attended the gig with Tornado Turner on guitar?

I'm kind of fascinated by this guy. A few weeks with The Stooges, just one gig, forgotten by most people, he even doesn't want to be remembered as a Stooge...

We wasn't a Stooge, he was just a really quick replacement, from what I've read the band never had an intention of him staying.

Zeke played more than one gig. Elton John joined the band on stage once, guess that makes him a Stooge too.

Zeke "was just a really quick replacement, (...) the band never had an intention of him staying".

Period. Same thing for Warren "Tornado Turner" Klein. Just one gig, ok, and so what?

Like I said, Dan Peters is considered Nirvana member, although he was "a quick replacement, the band never had an intention of him staying" and he performed "just one gig".

Do you want me to continue? Laughing
