| Iggy Pop Duisburg/Germany (Giesshalle, Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord) September 12, 2009
1. Les Feuilles Mortes (with Tine Kindermann on hand saw solo at the end of the song) – sung in French 2. I Want To Go To The Beach (with Tine Kindermann on backing vocal) 3. Schwesterlein, wann gehn wir nach Haus? [song by A. W. F. Zuccalmaglio, 1838] (duet with Tine Kindermann) – sung in German 4. Nice To Be Dead (with Tine Kindermann on backing vocal) 5. King Of The Dogs 6. Sweet Sixteen 7. Cock In My Pocket 8. Empty Heart [Rolling Stones cover] 9. Sick Of You 10. Touch Me [Doors cover] 11. Search And Destroy 12. Gimme Danger 13. Ne Me Quitte Pas [Jacques Brel cover] (duet with Tine Kindermann) – sung in French first encore: 14. Lili Marleen [Lale Andersen cover] (duet with Tine Kindermann) – Iggy sang in English, Tine in German 15. Es geht eine dunkle Wolk herein [folk song, 17th century] (duet with Tine Kindermann) – sung in German 16. I Wanna Be Your Dog/Ich moechte Dein Hund sein (with Tine Kindermann on backing vocal) – sung in German at the end second encore: 17. Mass Production
This was the second of two shows (the first show was the day before) that took place as part of the Ruhrtriennale Festival/Century Of Song. Tonight's programme was called "Love And Death". The festival takes place in the Rhein/Ruhr area of Germany over several months this summer and autumn. I was told that Iggy's setlist at the first show was slightly different (no "Mass Production" and other changes). The venue is an old industrial building from the 19th/early 20th century that has been turned into a concert venue. The hall is open on one side. The stage is in the hall and faces the open air, where stands with seats have been build. Capacity approx. 1500. Behind the stage there are all sorts of old and rusty machines and metal constructions from when the building was a factory.
19:00–20:00 short introductory speech by the director of the festival, then one instrumental piece by Marc Ribot on acoustic guitar, then Marc Ribot, a bass player, a drummer, a keyboard player and a keyboard/trumpet player backed Tine Kindermann for about 55 mins of dark German folk songs. It sounded a bit like Nico backed by Velvet Underground, only Tine is a soprano and also played the hand saw on one song. Interesting. Then an intermission of 30 mins. 20:30–21:45 Iggy Pop with the same band as above. Iggy appeared stage right, he wore black jeans, black sneakers and a black vest that he took off early.
The "Preliminaires" songs were played as on the album. "Les Feuilles Mortes" had a theremin-like hand saw solo by Tine Kindermann at the end. Pretty cool. "Schwesterlein, wann gehn wir nach Haus?" ("Little Sister, When Do We Go Home?") is a song from Tine Kindermann's repertoire of sinister folk songs ("in all of my songs somebody dies" is how she described it). Iggy sang it with Tine and in German. He also danced a folk dance with Tine during part of the song. Songs 6–12 were full-on Iggy hard rock, no prisoners taken. The show was all-seated, but during "Sweet Sixteen" people rushed towards the front. "Cock In My Pocket" came as a surprise and caused total pandemonium in the audience! "Empty Heart" and "Touch Me" can perhaps be seen as tributes to bands that influenced Iggy when he started The Stooges. Both were played fairly faithful to the originals. "Search And Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" caused more chaos in front of the stage. In complete contrast: "Ne Me Quitte Pas" was sung in French and in a style similar to "Preliminaires".
The first encore: "Lili Marleen" – yes THE "Lili Marleen" as first recorded by Lale Anderson in 1939 and later covered by Marlene Dietrich and turned into a movie by German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Iggy smiled when the audience recognized the song and cheered during the instrumental introduction. "Es geht eine dunkle Wolk herein" ("There Is A Dark Cloud Coming Down") is another of Tine's dark folk songs. "Dog" was played as we know it. Loud and monolithic. But Iggy introduced it in German as "Ich moechte Dein Hund sein" and also sang the last few choruses with Tine in German. Then Iggy stepped off the stage and onto the balcony on the right side of the hall and started to tease the people there. Then Iggy left the stage and we thought the show was over, but Iggy and the band came back for "Mass Production" during which Iggy posed like the man-machine workers in the movie "Metropolis". A fitting song for the venue.
We did not know what to expect for this show, but I can tell you, Iggy delivered! It was an honor to witness one of the few shows he played this year. A very special show, weird and wonderful.

| I forgot to mention that "Dog" came complete with mass stage invasion. Iggy did not have his usual stage crew with him so it nearly got out of control near the end. Iggy handed his microphone to the fans onstage and let them finish the song, while he made it over to the people on the balcony and then left. Oh, and after the show we saw Nina and then Iggy get into a waiting limo that drove off quickly. | |

| Sounds incredible. I was wondering whether it was a real gig too. Although to be honest I'd forgotten all about it with the excitement about the Hammersmith gigs. | |

No, like all the other "rock" songs in the set it was heavy and rocking. The band had a very Stooges-like sound.

great read especially love to read that Iggy didn't get rid of the stage invasions Man, it was wild! The stage was very high, but there was no rail in front of the stage, so Iggy was in constant contact with the crowd, balancing on the edge of the stage and stepping out onto on the loudspeakers that stood in front of the stage on the left and right side. When he gave the signal that it was OK for the crowd to get up on stage during "Dog" it got intense. He also smashed up a microphone, but there was a spare.
