StoogeFest - Is now the time?

If Ozzy Osbourne's musical legacy can support a festival, then surely Iggy and the Stooges deserve one. Thoughts? Ideas? Funding? Anyone?

Nah. Festivals attract too many people who are there for the party as opposed to the music. Most of them will just gab to their neighbours or stroke their mullets in eager anticipation of some shitty band with a current hit-single.

Also, how am I supposed to enjoy the openers knowing that Williamson is lurking in the wings?

The Stooges are best appreciated in a mid-sized indoor theatre where you are surrounded by fellow fans and the glorious noise bounces off the walls. The Detroit show at the State Theatre/Fillmore sounded WAY better than the outdoor DTE reunion gig.

Trailerborn, are you referring to the solo Iggy show in 2001, at the State theatre ? That was one KICKASS show ! DTE was okay

You're probably right. It would just be nice to see them get the respect they've deserved yet seldom received from a mostly unappreciative industry and public for 30 years now.

I meant the 2006(?) gig at the Fox - right next door to the State. I had front row seats - eternal thanks to my buddy at 89X. I was literally 3' away from Ron for the whole set and even snagged a guitar pick. Stellar show!

DTE was cool for the sense of occasion & seeing Ron w/ the Stooges for the first time, but by the Fox gig they were way tighter and LOUDER.

I also saw the 2001 State show and would rank it with the '94(?) American Caesar show - also at the State - as my favourite Iggy solo outing.

Music/performance aside, nothing will compare with seeing Iggy in fishnets opening for the Stones at the Silverdome in 1980. There was a blizzard of coins, lighters, cups etc. hitting the stage from outraged Stones fans. My first concert and I fucking loved it. Lots of stuff being thrown during the Blah, Blah, Blah show at St. Andrews also, but you can't see it on the bootleg videos.

I would'nt worry about it. The Stooges will be legends in the big book of Rock long after the latest hipster bands have faded into obscurity. Shit, people will be blasting Funhouse & Raw Power long after the record industry itself has collapsed - it's on it's last legs right now and fading fast.

AND the Stooges' debut - how can you forget to mention that!

theres already a festival named after a stooges song (no fun). i think thats sufficient...a suttle acknowledgment.

i dont want to see the stooges be some huge corporate machine in the same way as ozzy.

Maybe as a one-off, a Stooges celebratory gig might be fun. But I wouldn't want to see this as a long term thing, like the OzzFest. I don't think that's really the Stooges style anyway.

Sharon is the brains and drive behind Ozzfest. I don't see a non-addled person like Iggy putting up with her hard-nosed business tactics and constant touring for very long. (I know a guy whose band toured with Ozzfest. They were basically losing money, after expenses. Sharon told his manager that it was all about 'exposure' and they could just 'fuck-off' if they insisted on proper compensation).

All for nought. Rumor has it the Osbournes lost over 50% of their net worth in bad investments. Poor Ozzy will never get off the road. (His pipes are shot, but he still plays a mean harmonica on 'War Pigs')

That's really sort of what I had in mind. It would kind of be a re-reunion of the Stooges except with James and ultimately a proper farewell to Ron. It could also be a touring release party for Robert Matheu's book, EA's 1971 box set and especially the ultimate Raw Power box set. Hey if you're gonna dream, dream big.

Was that the same guy who jumped onstage at DTE? I remember waiting in line for the bathroom, before the first band (Von Bondies) even went on & that guy was staggering around bellowing "Little Doll"
That show at the Fox KILLED--way faster, louder & harder than DTE. 4 yrs. of gigging payed off. Props to Rock who was hitting as hard as his 20 something self & was way up in the mix. Second & last time I saw them...

Quite possibly, but impossible to say. I missed the Von Bondies and Sonic Youth at DTE because of a fight in the scrubland/parking area between a few of my drunk friends and an group of large, loud, drunk folks. I had to do some serious negotiating with security to even get in the gate. Good times...

And yeah, it's too bad the Fox show wasn't put out on DVD. Second and last time I saw them too. Should've seen the Meadowbrook gig, but who knew...

Well, Ozzy sold tens of millions of records. Black Sabbath is one of the biggest bands ever, and he one one of the biggest solo acts ever. The Stooges and Iggy could never come close to those feats. I just don't see a Stooge-fest happening.

Black Sabbath I admit were important to the beginning of heavy heavy metal and as a group I will give them their due. Ozzy as a solo artist has really contributed nothing innovative or lasting in the grand scheme of things. He's a great entertainer, but he is no innovator. The Stooges are undoubtedly just as important to music, if not more so than Black Sabbath. The Stooges spawned Punk. I don't think their really is any debate on that. Without the Stooges there may have possibly never been any New York Dolls or Ramones or Sex Pistols. So, if you are judging a groups influence on the number of records they sold, then you should get a job in the record industry. They love that sort of thinking. Hell, supposedly Van Gogh never even sold a painting in his life time.
