Very interesting, thoroughgoing and thoughtful interview, thanks for posting the link. Great to read Iggy's comments on Ron, and Scott...

I hope he really does those final Ron tracks full justice, whatever he decides to do with them. At least it certainly doesn't seem from this that he would ever forget about them!

So the Atlanta tape will be released in April? This is great news!

And I'm glad this lineup is called Iggy&The Stooges.

A great interview. Thanks for the link.

Great interview! and great news about the Raw Power remaster and the atlanta show. It's great to see that iggy really wants to do something about the recordings that ron left behind. And a possibility that they are going to record studio versions of the bootleg stuff!

in 2008 all 3 concerts I attended
were called 'Iggy & the Stooges'. Ron was playing with them.
I don't get the difference.

The band was officially called just The Stooges up to 1971.
But even then some gigs would be promoted as Iggy Pop and the Stooges or even just Iggy Pop.

Raw Power and the subsequent tour dates were technically ascribed to Iggy And The Stooges, but once again quite a few shows were credited to just Iggy Pop (such as the New Years Eve 1973 show) which didn't please the other Stooges too much!

Despite some promoters and publicists efforts, between 2003 and 2008 the band liked to refer to themselves simply as, once again, The Stooges and eschewed mentioning Iggy's name separately. Of course, as before, lots of gigs were billed as Iggy And The Stooges but this was not what the band wanted. The Weirdness is credited only to The Stooges as per their wishes.

So, to summarise, after all my waffle, the original band with Ron on guitar was simply The Stooges and the 1972 - 1974 band with James on guitar was Iggy And The Stooges.

Now James has rejoined they are reverting to Iggy And The Stooges though I don't suppose that this change will make any difference to the press or the public at large.

Cheers

Richard

this is a great article and clears up alot of stuff we've been discussing on here

yeh, essentially "the stooges" is Ron on guitar, and "iggy and the stooges" is james on guitar, its odd to separate them as i feel its one band, but it almost is like two bands - or different 'shades' of it, different style i think

both the gigs i saw with Ron were iggy & the stooges, i think this is simply for marketing purposes, the name iggy pop is known so they throw it in to sell more tickets, no harm in it really i guess, esp considering iggy had a 30year solo career

but when it comes down to it, its just on album names "the stooges - the stooges" "the stooges -funhouse" "iggy and the stooges - raw power" "the stooges - the weirdness" and if there is anything else it'll most likely be under "iggy and the stooges" - thats if james is writing, i dont know how they'll label the 25min songs Ron left behind

thanks for posting the article Cathy

It's simple for me. 'The Stooges' mean Ron on guitar.

They would have sold fewer tickets if they had billed themselves as simply The Stooges as people would have assumed Iggy wasn't playing. When they did Fun House at Hammersmith one of my friends checked with me before he bought his ticket that Iggy would be performing since it was billed as The Stooges

Thanks for the link cb!! Some great stuff in there.

Regarding the whole band naming scenario, I too have always seen The Stooges as Ron, and Iggy and The Stooges as James - guitar-wise. But both lineups put out beautiful sounds, so in the grand scope, I am grateful to have (and had) the chance to see the first and second, no matter how they are billed.

Properly recording some of those "in between" songs would be very cool!

Well then you must not be much of a Stooges fan because Ron was an integral part of what made the band what it was in the past and is today. The tape Iggy was referring to was not merely Ron playing guitar, but Ron and Scott playing tunes without lyrics. So, if you were a real Stooges fan you would be very interested in what becomes of what are probably the last recordings of Ron Asheton.

This is a really great article. Very thorough. Bill Holdship should be commended for asking the questions he asked. He got answers to a lot of the questions that have been asked here. Thanks cb for posting the link.

Now, now give the kid a break. He probably just recently discovered the Stooges and knows not of what he speaks. He is the future and us old ones must bestow upon him our knowledge and reverence of and for all that is Stooges in order to continue the Church of Stooges.

Of course those last Ron recordings are VITALLY important!!! I'm absolutely desperate to hear them..

Guess we're all different - I'm not that much interested in any remastering of Raw Power.

That's the marketing side of things, as Donald has pointed out.
Emotionally, for me anyway, the lineup of the last few years was most definitely 'The Stooges'..and that's not a slight on the James lineup in any way either. Iggy himself obviously feels there's a difference..interesting how he expatiates upon the subject in this interview.

The difference is that the "Stooges" were Pop/Asheton songs, "Iggy and the Stooges" were Pop/Williamson songs. Ron and James were very different in their approach to writing songs/riffs. Both are great but different.

Because the RP songs, with the exception of 'I Need Somebody' don't do that much for me. . And much as I admire practically everything Ron ever did, I need to hear him playing GUITAR more than anything!! Smile
(Bearing that in mind, it's a wonder why I didn't order the 1971 boxset... Laughing )
