| been listening to the stooges "MORE POWER" constantly for the past week. the stooges cover bo diddley's "I"M A MAN" and it is hard not to notice the striking resemblance to bowie's "JEAN GENIE" ......... now i am not stupid and i KNOW that riff has been around in blues and rock circles for ever and ever......BUT in this particular case the riff is almost identical as are some of the fills. so which version came first and is this where bowie got the idea for jean genie or vice versa ??? the stooges were under contract to MAINMAN at the time so it is perfectly possible bowie would have heard this unreleased track. put this same question up on a bowie forum and nobody had a definitive answer. does any iggy expert here know the timeline ? | |

| im assuming the stooges did it first. i originally thought ya were inquiring who was using their name first....bowie got "ziggy" from "iggy". his music also started taking on different directions after iggy came into the picture. he tried immitated ig in more ways that one...including walking out on top of the audience (in which case he apparently fell and never attempted it again). | |

| While we're at it, has the strong resemblence between "Cock In My Pocket" & Elton John's "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting" (not sure what the official title is) ever been acknowledged by any Stooges or Elton? | |

| http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jean_Genie"The Jean Genie" was composed and recorded in New York City, where Bowie spent time hanging out with the Warhol set's Cyrinda Foxe. The song's chugging R&B riff is often compared to The Yardbirds (and specifically their cover of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man") [1][2] while the lyrics have been likened to the "stylised sleaze" of The Velvet Underground.[1] The subject matter was inspired in part by Bowie's friend Iggy Pop or, in Bowie's own words, "an Iggy-type character... it wasn't actually Iggy."[3] The line "He's so simple minded, he can't drive his module" would later give the band Simple Minds their name.[4] The title has long been taken as a pun on the name of the homosexual author Jean Genet.[1] Bowie was once quoted as saying that this was "subconscious... but it's probably there, yes".[3] In his book "Moonage Daydream" in 2005, he stated this more unequivocally: "Starting out as a lightweight riff thing I had written one evening in NY for Cyrinda’s enjoyment, I developed the lyric to the otherwise wordless pumper and it ultimately turned into a bit of a smorgasbord of imagined Americana ... based on an Iggy-type persona ... The title, of course, was a clumsy pun upon Jean Genet".[5]

That isn't the Stooges doing "I'm A Man". It's just Iggy and an unknown guitarist - long thought to be James Williamson, but he's said it wasn't him. Iggy directly quotes the 'Jean Genie' lyric during this track so it must've been recorded after 'Jean Genie'. Andrew

| "Jean Genie" is definitely an imitation of, clearly intended as a tribute to, The Yardbirds. As well as using the main riff to their version of "I'm A Man", there's also the patented "Yardbirds rave-up" that they insert a few times. Jeff Beck was Ronno's favourite guitar player, and they even got him on-stage at the famous last Ziggy Stardust show at Hammersmith to play on "Jean Genie", which they extended in the Yardbirds style, with Bowie playing some Keith Relf style harp ( and a snatch of "Love Me Do" ). | |

| Everyone knew at the time that I'm a Man was lifted from The Yardbirds' version of the Muddy (and Bo Diddley) song.
According to someone who was on that bus, it was Bowie's mate George Underwood, a blues fan who was in the King Bees w David, who first started playing that riff.
I suppose Bowie's genius was that he had no shame at all about lifting it complete; Ronson and Trevor Bolder knew the song well from the Yardbirds version so they just dropped all the riffs from that into the song thinking it was a throwaway.

And Iggy's was in having no shame for saying something to the effect of "At least my band doesn't have to steal old Yardbirds songs", with a straight face, when talking about the difference between his music and Bowie's. (I can't remember the exact quote) I'm guessing they'd shelved "Sick Of You" by the time he said it.

| Haha!, and I spent half of last night playing through "Happy Together" in my head! And thinking "Well, I guess the verse has that kind of 'chugging' rhythm to it". | |

| Speaking of the Turtles, anyone got a link to the Iggy radio interview w/ Flo n' Eddie?
Only heard it once, but I remember a hugely wasted Ig discussing slashing himself on stage the previous evening "over a woman". I guess this was either post-Max's '73 or Rodney's '74. F & E seemed to be mocking the poor guy.
F & E put out an album of highlights from their radio show many moons ago. Might be on there.
