He moved to bass because Iggy had signed a "solo" deal with Mainman/CBS and went to London to record his next album, taking James Williamson with him. Initially there was no intention of involving Ron or Scott, or of it being a "Stooges" record. In the mid-seventies Iggy stated he'd also wanted a new band name, The Users.

After trying out various bass players and drummers in London, and not liking any, James suggested getting the Ashetons back. Which they did. Ron moved over to the vacant bass player spot, supposedly only until they could find a new bass player at which time he'd move back to guitar.

Re Jimmy Recca, I've no idea at all. Natalie, any clues?

Hope that helps

I've never read anywhere that Iggy was going to call his new band "The Users", where did you hear this?

It's a quote in an interview with Nick Kent, circa 1975, Iggy says something like "But they wouldn't let me", presumably meaning Mainman.

My guess would be that interview is also where The Users, of "Sick Of You"/"(I'm) In Love With Today" fame got their name.

Considering they got their band and record company logo lettering from the Stooges, their label was called "Raw Records" (was originally going to be called "Raw Power Records"), and the lyrics for their version of "Louie Louie" are taken straight from "Metallic KO". I think that's a pretty safe bet for the origin of their name, haha.

Seek in the archives and ye shall find ...

Exact quote ... (Kent) Iggy wants to call the next band The Users, "I wanted to call it that back when we were with Mainman, but DeFries vetoed it". And anyway, James Williamson doesn't like it. He shakes his head at the very mention of the name.

Many thanks to Lucky Monkey for the very useful posting!
