This doesn't tie in with either of the other 3 Atalnta tape stories we've been told so far. First fans gave a tape to the band (the only story confirmed by a member of the band), it was in Iggy's secret stash, Robert Matheu had a copy. So now CBS had it all along? Despite the fact it wasn't recorded by them?

Despite the fact it wasn't recorded by them? Georgie Peaches was recorded by sound engineer Joe Neil (from Sam's Tape Truck) as reguested by CBS for a possible radio station broadcast, but it was never broadcasted. Radio/and the CBS (who hired Joe Neil for the job)...were not ready for the "reality" of The Stooges. It´s possible that lot of people got a casette copy of the recording after the gig. And that´s what we are now listening..."Old casette " on CD. (Now, who's casette copy it is, someone at CBS kept one, Matheu, Iggy, Ron...some fan found a copy.. Joe Neil kept a one copy...I dont know...) but I guess that the orginal master reel tape got lost, (because you can hardly even hear guitar on some of the songs and the backing vocals are louder than Iggy's lead vocals on "Open Up And Bleed") - Georgie Peaches tape was not mixed, - You can't really mix something that has only one track, - so maybe they just EQ'd it and tried to make it sound best they could...but there's not much that you can do without the orginal master tape.

Interesting history there..but just as an FYI, Cocksucker Blues never got released. As a way to fulfill their contract with Decca, the Stones gave them this single (which was actually Mick solo) and said take it or leave it. They left it.
Getting off topic, but actually 'Cocksucker Blues' WAS released by Decca - in Germany, for one day only, and by mistake! Sometime during the 1980's Decca Germany was compiling a singles box set of the Rolling Stones and wanted to include an unreleased track. One of their (German) staff discovered this track in the vaults and, not knowing the meaning of the song, arranged for it to be pressed up and included in the set. This box set did hit the shops in Germany, but some frantic telephone calls from Decca London resulted in it being withdrawn from sale on the same day. This must be one of the rarest Stones artifacts ever. I remember reading a quote from a Decca manager that he was going to keep his copy of the box "until I can retire on the proceeds"!

| Getting off topic too, but 'Cocksucker Blues' is one of my all time favourite Rolling Stones songs. The lyrics are really funny
Where do I get my cock sucked, where do I get my ass fucked, I may have no money, but I'd know where to put it"...hahaha...
Just imagine the look on the Decca managers faces, when they first heard that...

I humbly stand corrected. I didn't know that! Yeah, that song is hilarious. The Decca people must have shit when they heard that the first time! Anyway..sorry for derailing the topic. - Ron and Scott sound so good that even with the missing guitar, the songs sound wonderful.
This sounds like a review of Raw Power from a parallel universe where the balance between Ron/Scott and James has been reversed from that which we know!!! It is also a very valid comment about the Peaches recording. I've heard Stooges bootlegs over the years whose quality varied from average to dreadful, but Peaches sounds great to my ears. PS - despite the less than perfect sound on the YWMA set, the songs still rock like crazy! (now bring on the "Popped" set!)

| Well, speakin of the letter......I did some reasearch, I´m not suprised that the Stooges got kicked out the CBS and I´m not suprised by the letter.. Check this out: Cencorship of rock music in America in the early seventies:
Under the direction of President Richard Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew ignites widespread interest in censoring popular music by making statements concerning drugs in rock music.
As a direct result -
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sends all American radio stations telegrams threatening their licenses for playing rock music that glorified drugs or premarital sex. New York Senator James Buckley writes a report linking rock music to drug use. He calls for the record industry to eliminate drug-using or drug-endorsing rock musicians before the federal government feels it necessary to take action.
MCA Records drops 18 acts from their record label because they believe the performers promote promiscuity and drugs in their songs.
The Illinois Crime Commission publishes a list of popular rock songs that contain drug references, including Peter, Paul and Mary's "Puff The Magic Dragon" and the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." - This list is send to all major record labels in America.
Janis Joplin is fined $200 for violating local profanity and obscenity laws for her performance after a concert in Tampa, Florida. John Lennon's songs "Woman is the Nigger of the World" and "Working Class Hero" is banned by radio stations across the country. Same goes for John Denver's hit song "Rocky Mountain High," - American radio stations fear that the song's word "high" refers to drugs.
Country Joe McDonald is fined $500 for uttering an obscenity during a concert performance of his song "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag." and radio stations across the U.S. ban Bob Dylan's single "George Jackson" over concerns about the word "shit" in its lyrics. Chrysalis Records changes the lyrics to Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath" without the band's knowledge or consent. Label executives fear radio stations will not play the original, which contains the lyric "got him by the balls."
Reverend Charles Boykin of Tallahassee, Florida, blames rock bands for teenage pregnancy. Boykin conducts his own survey of 1,000 unwed mothers and determines that 984 became pregnant while listening to rock music. Meanwhile all American radio stations across the country refuse to play Loretta Lynn's song "The Pill" because of its references to promote birth control.
The group known as "the Movement to Restore Democracy" calls for the banning of all rock music to end the spread of Socialism in America. The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee issues a report on John Lennon and Yoko Ono, advocating the termination of Lennon's visa to live in the U.S. The report calls the couple "strong advocates of the program to 'dump Nixon'."
this goes on and on... | |
