http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=8062relevant passage: MT: Were there any problems, such as sonic issues, you encountered while assembling the reissues? Edmonds: Not really. The early John Cale mixes [for The Stooges] surfaced on a tape that was slightly worse for wear, but that’s about it. And we would have welcomed those mixes in even worse shape, I can tell you that! That’s a very interesting tape. It was supplied by collector Jeff Gold. It contained the Stooges debut as we know it, followed by another version of the album — different mixes in a different sequence. As this tape was believed to have come from the collection of Danny Fields, it became obvious that this was the long-speculated-upon John Cale version of the album that the band rejected and remixed [with Elektra president Jac Holzman]. It was like the tape was an A-B exercise with the two versions of the album, perhaps just to check that the remixes were in fact superior. Many thanks for posting the interview Lurzen! That's really interesting, I wonder what the alternate track sequence was? As there are first pressings of the album that list the tracks in a different order on the label. I used to have a promo like it, but someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse a while back. I first started looking out for one having heard, from a reliable source, about someone who claimed to have a stock copy that not only listed them in a different order but played them that way too. As far as I know a copy that actually plays that way remains unconfirmed, anyone on here got one they've been keeping quiet about? But the alternate sequence on some promo labels is for certain. One that sold on ebay recently ... StoogesWould be interesting to know if these were printed up with the original Cale version as the model, and then mostly scrapped when it was remixed and had the sequence altered. Anyone have any ideas?

| I don't remember the order of the songs, but that is the promo cover I am holding in the screen cap posted in my interview thread.
Danny gave it to me in mid July of 1969. At the time, nothing was discussed about there being more than one mix or the order of the songs.
We all just could not believe it was officially released the same week as Woodstock! Poetic justice at it's finest!!!

| Actually John, it has the Cale mix tracklisting but the times are for the Iggy/Holzman mix. Very strange.
I'm really waiting to hear what Cale has to say about his mixes. Has he ever spoken publicly about his version of the album?
By the way, I mentioned this in the Rhino thread, but I've got a speed-corrected version done. If anyone would like "details" about it (hint hint!) send me a PM.

| Cale has spoke many times about how professional and easy to get along with the Stooges were in the studio at that time but i have never heard or read anything any comment on his rejected mixes. So Rhino had all the Cale mixes in 2005...interesting! | |

Yeah, you're (mostly) right, don't know how I messed that up. However, it looks like Doll and Dog timings are for the Cale mixes on the label, which makes this very confusing. But another thing I just noticed is that someone scrathced out Not Right in pencil and wrote in Dog, so I'm thinking now that the LP plays the regular version.

| John, so where is the Cale running order listed? Is it in the liners to the new Rhino issue, or did I just miss something along the way?
For the record, I have serious doubts about a stock copy that plays this sequence existing, or even a promo, but I can't say one way or the other 100%. It seems unlikely, at least.
P.S. I would assume it does, re play the regular version, mine did.

P.S. I would assume it does, re play the regular version, mine did. I'm just going by the running order on the Rhino CD and assume it's the way Cale wanted it. The labels shown in the above Ebay auction link show the same running order.

| Okay, makes sense to me. I don't have the new Rhino issue, so I wasn't sure if maybe they gave details in the liners or something.
Re timings, I'd have to check, but I think those are just the regular timings given in the order they appear on a standard promo. They've altered the sequence of song titles on this version, but they haven't altered the sequence of timings to match. If you see what I mean?
Thanks for the info. | |
