‘Well, they’re back, and it was well worth the wait. The Stooges are now the most infinitely progressive rock and roll band on the planet… As good as their first record was (and it wears better and better with age), this one puts things on a whole new level. Nobody has ever done a record like this, no one will ever (dare to) again... Iggy has become a master vocalist, a tongue-torturer who does things no one else would dare do; everything he does is a dare and a challenge, too… Listen to ‘TV Eye’ for a minute, and tell me if you don’t notice how much the rhythm section has improved. Or listen for Ron Asheton’s guitar lines on ‘1970’ or ‘Down On The Street’, and see if they aren’t really truly cosmic. But it’s on the second side that The Stooges really open up… A lot of the new-found freedom to be far-out and instantly relatable at the same time comes from saxophonist Steve Mackay, of course. Even though Steve seems to have a few things left to work out stylistically (more apparent on the title cut than ‘L.A. Blues’), he really pushes the entire band into a new dimension… Iggy and the boys have, to be sure, struck back at all of us with the full force of their explicit frenzy.
