Firstly thanks again to Natalie for being such a great fan club President. Here's a few of my thoughts on Popped.
In issue 1 (which I figure is from early 1970) it says they've written four new songs, one being "Big Time Bum" so was this an early title for one of the Funhouse tracks or was this the 1971 track that we know and love?
Sammy from Hong Kong sounds like a bit of a dude setting up his own local branch of the Stooges Fan club halfway round the world, wonder if he ever got to see them for real? It would be cool to get him and some of the other original Stoogelings Courageous onto this forum.
In the Popped where Natalie says she's just heard the Funhouse tape (before its release) it's then mentioned that Billy (Cheatham) sounds super good. He never played on any of the album cuts did he?
Regarding John Bellisimo's writing his Stooges Epic, I was very intrigued by this and although he has passed away I tracked down his brother just in case he still had the writings. The response was that his brother is still too cut up about John's passing to go through his belongings, so obviously I left it there. Were any of the Changes Magazines or any other vintage Stooge articles written by John Bellisimo?
Lastly from the Mini Popped, damn we were so close to getting an album of the 1971 stuff, think that could have been my favorite Stooges album of all.

One more thing, the filming of I Wanna be Your Dog at the Chicago concert in December 1969, that would be an amazing find, probably just gathering dust in someones attic! Why?

They also did Nico's "Evening of the light".. wonder if there was a tape-recorder in the room at the time? Would love to hear it.. Do you remember the arrangement on that Natalie? Sort of imagine a slow, gloomy wah wah riff from Ron..

I'm pretty sure that "Evening Of Light" was just another title for the big end of concert Freak Out, which was titled "LA Blues" on the Fun House album. I'm certain it was not a cover of the Nico song, just the title that was nicked.

I think the song on the footage is "1969" but the tape is running really fast or its a freakout at the end of the song

Billy did not play on the FunHouse LP. It may not be a clear as I would have liked to express the thought now, but I was referring to hearing Billy playing in the dressing room during the FunHouse era. Billy had actually become a member of the band before Zeke joined on bass, which was after Dave was sacked by Iggy ( at Goose lake ). Billy played in a non stage performing manner for a few months before he actually took the stage with the guys. Billy did not play on stage most of the nights at Unganos. (aside....it will be very interesting for me to hear the Rhino release to determine if it was the night Billy did play during that stint) In the Stooges authorized biography, you can see Billy standing on the side of the stage in the audience during one of the nights at Unganos. If you look at the booklet that is part of the 1000 Lights CD, you will see a picture of Billy, Zeke and Scott on stage. That was taken in September 1970 in Falls Church, Virginia and is the one of the only pictures I have left of Billy on stage. By October of that year, Billy had left the band as a performer and went back to his roadie position and James had joined the band.
The "Evening of Light" performed was NOT LA Blues. At that time I was not familiar with Nico's version and I very distinctly remember asking about the song. I was informed it was "Nico's Evening of Light".
Lastly, many, many people have tried to uncover that footage of the Chicago gig but to the best of my knowledge, it is lost forever.

@Adams: From reading Popped, it seemed more like a song they rehearsed at home and didn't do live, it was "Nico's" too, as Natalie confirmed now recently.. And due to Nico visit's to Iggy's bedroom in the Funhouse at the time as well as him starring at her promo-video, thought this could influenced them doing a "home-version" for fun..
@Rabid: Another possible recorded 10 min Stooge freekout is what I will search for till the day I die

Thanks for clearing out the questions Natalie. I'm sure even Popped explains a lot we didn't know, it will create even more questions, and thats a good thing for sure.. Guess such a mystic and brilliant band never will satisfy our hunger for knowledge..

Thanks Natalie - it's so good to have the knowledge of someone who was actually there, rather than the second (or third of fourth) hand info that we usually have to accept. Wouldn't it be amazing if a version of "Evening Of Light" was actually recorded? Cheers, Richard

Here's my attempt at dating the Popped-newsletters:
# 1 – starts with "HAAAA STOOGE FANS EVERYWHERE!!!!" (7 pages) – Dec. 1969/Jan. 1970 # 2 – starts with "This issue of POPPED visits you right from the zone." (6 pages) – May 1970 # 3 – starts with "I can only start this newsletter with (...)" (8 pages) – June 1070 # 4 – starts with "IGGY..IGGY..IGGY..IGGY..(...)" (8 pages)* – August 1970 # 5 – starts with "HELLO STOOGE FANS AND STOOGELINGS (...)" (7 pages) – Dec. 1970 (Jan. 1971?) # 6 – starts with "THE STOOGES ARE BACK....." (1 page/"MINI POPPED") – April 1971
*due to a printing error page 7 repeats page 7 from Popped # 3
