"Dirt" and "1970":

I made a side by side comparison of the New York tracks on "1000 Lights/Popped" and the same songs on "Unganos".

"Dirt" and "1970" were taken from the same recording on both CDs.

But on "1000 Lights/Popped" the sound seems to be clearer with less tape hiss. So either Easy Action had a lower generation tape or used different noise reduction/filters when remastering and restoring the tape.

Any thoughts?

That's very interesting. So Natalie's recording is better than the one used by Rhino?
Once again the big corporate company has been beaten by smaller independant EA.
Were these two tracks all that you had from Unganos, Natalie?
Cheers,

Yeah, the independent EA recordings are better, but they actually care. Rhino has proven beyond a doubt they are only in it for money. Seems like whatever they find in the vaults, they release as is with no effort made to actually listen to the product they are putting on the market.

I read a review on Amazon.com of a Rhino release of old New Order material and it too was an utter disaster, featuring pops and clicks from records they were simply copied from (among other mistakes). I feel "lucky" Unganos turned out as good as it did. This is probably due to the fact that the tape it was taken from didn't have much in the way of problems. If it did, we would all be quite literally, hearing it by now as Rhino would have never bothered to clean it up.

Same recording or same show? How can you tell it is the same recording? I haven't had my Ungano's yet so I can't do the comparison.

Same recording. I loaded both (1000 Lights/Popped and Unganos) into my computer and ran the relevant tracks simultaneously using two different audio players. You can hear it's the same recording, because the background noises (laughter and comments from members of the audience) sound EXACTLY the same on both discs. BUT on 1000 Lights/Popped the sound of the band seems to have more presence and "bite" and there is less tape hiss. But I think that's simply because Easy Action did some serious work on the recording (equalization, noise reduction etc.) whereas Rhino released the tape "as is", I guess.

Do we have any information if Rhino used the master tape?

I think we can be pretty sure that Easy Action had a copy that somebody made off of the master and gave to Natalie. That's also why they only have the two tracks and not the full show.

I'm pretty sure Rhino used the master, as you say they probably just left it as is, whilst EA tinkered with it a little. Maybe it would have sounded better with more bass heft but I'm just glad they didn't fuck it right up.

I agree. Not fucking it up is an achievement in itself, when it comes to Rhino these days.

Yeah, and the speed seems correct, too ;-)

COMPARING THOSE 2 SONGS BETWEEN E.A. AND RHINO SHOWS RHINO PLAYS A BIT FASTER,WHICH VERSION IS CORRECT?

RHINO SOUNDS LIKE A STRAIGHT COPY FROM THE TAPE WITHOUT TOO MUCH REWORKING WHILE E.A. REMOVED TAPE HISS AND DID SOME EQ-ING
ANYBODY FOR A SERIOUS REMASTER?

I thought Rhino's was considerably better quality. I mostly go by the drums. They sound normal on Rhino's whereas on Popped they sound rather tinny.

I have the feeling the speed sounds more correct on EA/1000 Lights. But that's just a feeling. Could somebody with perfect pitch please check?!
