bootlegs from 1970 - 1973

hey guys i have everything official and a lot of the not so official stuff as well. i was wondering if there are any super rare boots going around that are of good quality?

Wish there was more vintage stuff out there, but I guess we've pretty much seen it all.

The Atlanta show that was included with the Raw Power reissue a few years back was a new one to many of us. So although it seems pretty unlikely that any more 60's / 70's Stooges material will materialise, it's still possible that there are more shows out there. Fingers crossed...

I'm still hoping that whoever actually owns the original tapes of all the 1973 rehearsals will finally allow a decent quality release of all this material. Since the Rubber Legs album in 1980s virtually all the reissues of this material have been copied from copies and previous releases, rather than using the actual master tapes - do they still exist? Who owns them?

Richard, if anyone owns the 'master tapes' of the 1973 rehearsals it will be Bomp Records. The late Greg Shaw told me many years ago that James Williamson delivered a large crate of those tapes to Bomp as part of the same deal that produced the 'Sick of You' EP amongst others. The journalist Nick Kent is often stated to have some of these tapes, but if so they are more likely to be first-generation copies than actual masters.

The 'Rubber Legs' album has serious pitch problems in that the tracks play considerably faster than they should. For that reason I doubt whether master tapes were used. There is a bootleg vinyl album called 'Studio Rehearsals 73-74' which has those tracks at the correct pitch and in better quality.

That's right - Rubber Legs is the wrong speed and the bootleg is notably better. I only mentioned Rubber Legs as it was the first (of very, very many) semi official releases of this material, but even RL clearly wasn't sourced from the masters or even low generation copies.

Do the masters still even exist? It seems unlikely considering how many times this material has been recycled from the same copied / digital sources. The Heavy Liquid box, for example, which aimed to collect a massive amount of 1973 material, uses the same old copies as had appeared on numerous cds over the years.

It's clear that Williamson provided Bomp with a large collection of tapes in the mid 1970s - I wonder what happened to these actual tapes? These would probably have been only one generation (perhaps two) down from the masters so these are what we really need to find, if they still exist. If they could be tracked down perhaps then we could have this material more complete and sounding better than we've ever heard it.
