| I've noticed lately that quite a few Stooges songs written in 1973 all end with the same way. The ending I'm talking about is apparent in "Rubber Legs" and the 3 minute version of "Open Up And Bleed". Is this ripped from another song by a different band as it sounds VERY familour to me. | |

| Regarding the 1973 rehearsal stuff you have to remember that the few tracks we have now were never intended to be released. At best many of these songs are still in flux, still being worked on, unfinished - and many are simply one off jams, possibly never repeated. So any similarities, and I agree there are many little flourishes, half-riffs and lyrical similarities, are surely due to the band trying to work out how the hell to play most of these songs. And if you've got a great ending it's worth trying it out on a few songs to see where it fits best.
It's interesting that with only a few exceptions most of these rehearsal tracks were never properly recorded (not by the Stooges anyway - see Kill City) and most significantly to me, most were never played live.
Out of all the new spring 1973 tunes only "Open Up And Bleed", "Head On" and "Cock In My Pocket" were actually considered 'finished' enough to be incorporated into the live set. Not even "Rubber Legs" made it, despite sounding pretty structured on the tapes.
Later on in 1973 further new tunes were added such as "Rich Bitch" but this was much looser and more jammed. "Wet My Bed" and "I Got Nothin'" at least had more solid tunes although with songs such as "Johanna" and "Rubber Legs" remaining unused I wonder why a song such as "Wet My Bed" was deemed better? And I know "Johanna" was played live back in Sept 1973 but it wasn't a regular fixture of the live set. I wonder why not?
Whilst I'm wondering, I wonder why only four tracks from Raw Power were played during 1973 - it's not as though the Stooges had a vast backlog of songs. Apart from rough attempt at rehearsing "Your Pretty Face..." neither this nor "Shake Appeal", "Penetration" or "Death Trip" were ever played live in concert in 1973/74 as far as I can tell.
Enough rambling...
Cheers,
Richard
ps - back on topic - I don't mind tunes being reused if they are good enough - but frankly "Loser" isn't, and it smacks of laziness. | |
