the beginning of TV EYE, right after iggy's scream, the riff comes in at 0.03 seconds. it feels like one giant flip off to everything. and at 3.37 or 3.38 it sounds like ron is bending the string extra hard and it's just beyond words how great that sounds. overall, every note that is played on that album is beyond wor(l)ds

The extended version of Ann. Also the solos in TV Eye and 1970. Just awesome.

Very hard to say...I really like what Ron was doing on Fun House (title track), very jammy but still rockin'. Also really dig the chaotic approach heard in that "Ann" outro (Dance of Romance??? something like that, huh???). To quote David Thomas, "Avant-garage"..I believe this title works well for some of that early Stooges material, as well.
But then again, James Williamson added a dynamic to the band only he could have brought. Very bluesy, but not in a Ron sorta way, and def. not in a Page/Jimi/Richards sort of way, either, which was sort of a staple at the time. James seems to have taken the blues, and some how, some way, pull a rabbit out of a hat.
As much as I love Ron (my absolute favorite Stooge), and as much as I hate to say it....this era of the Stooges reunion has been my favorite. James does a fantastic job playing even Ron's songs (Ron seldom played James, which I get...), and when he did they never really sounded right. But then again, Ron was a musician's musician. A true artist in the way of writing, and preferring to play his own material.
Both he and Ron had very unique approaches.

The guitar solo in Down on the Street is one of the most psychedelic things I've ever heard. Listening to Fun House on acid is a must. Holy fuck.

Pretty much anything of Ron's, but especially the Fun House album. The rhythm parts, solos and overdubs are truly in a class all of their own. Totally killer riffs and solos, string bends, even arpeggios! If I absolutely had to pick just one part of just one song, it would probably be the solo in Loose. The discordant chord repeated 10 times at the very end of the solo still gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it.

At first I didnt relate to this thread, then I thought of the riffs. When you think about it they are as foundational in the history of rock as Johnny B Goode and Louie Louie. Especially these -
I wanna be your dog TV Eye No Fun Loose I got a right Search and Destroy
These riffs are rock n roll 101 so I guess the score is Ron - 4, James - 3. James gets an extra point for Search and Destroy because its also one of the greatest songs in rock history.
The "musicians musician" comment about Ron made me laugh. It shows how perceptions change, in the early seventies he was considered neck on neck with Lou Reed as possibly the worst guitarist who ever had a major record deal. Punk changed everything thank god

yes, like... Ron in a psychedelic and avant-garde way and James in a more bluesy and rock-n'-roll... They both changed the way you think an electric guitar should be played

Pretty much every note played by Ron on the first two albums. Special mention however goes to the moment when he breaks out into the wah towards the fade-out of 'Little Doll' - as if the music hadn't already been infinitely mind-blowing up to that point.

Since there's no definitive studio version of this song, it's impossible to offer a timing but towards the end of Heavy Liquid there's yet another hook of riffing 7 or so notes (almost sound like harmonics but aren't) repeated, thrown into the frenzied crescendo of the song, actually presaged earlier in it (in most versions) by the keyboards. It is so unexpected amidst all the barrelhousing drive of this fracas, and points out the genius of this band for trying to top itself with better and better ideas within each song itself. I can't wait for new collaborations. P.S. YES, I admit I'm not a musician and can't write in guitar porn terms.
