I finally saw it last night in Helsinki. Pretty much what you'd expect, some rare-ish footage mixed with interviews focusing on Iggy. There's not a lot of new stuff for the die hards, mainly never before seen photos and better quality video. The story follows the bands years from 67 to 73 and in the end briefly talks about the reunion/reformation.

All in all it was super interesting for a fan and so-so for those who only came to see a random music doc.

If you guys have any questions about the film (footage/interviews etc.) im all ears.

Thanks for giving us a first hand fan account of this doc - its what we've been longing for. I have a couple of questions which, depending on your level of expertise, you may or may not be able to answer, but here goes:

1/ This doc supposedly contained previously unreleased footage. Do you know what that was and can you describe it?
2/ Was the St.Louis 1973 footage used and if so was it better quality than on the Raw Power box set?
3/ Was the NYC Academy Of Music footage used and if so, how much?

I don't know only that it seems highly unlikely given that, from all accounts we've heard, the film is skewered toward the original incarnation of the Stooges. The demos need vocals and with Iggy's declaration of imminent retirement and admission that he found the Stooges style of music hard to relate to in his middle age, it seems unlikely that the demos would have been finished. But who knows in ten years time? It took a long time for Nirvana's final recordings to be released so who knows if a deluxe edition of The Weirdness won't happen with the unreleased demos?

Brilliant! Thanks for the heads up.
Shame it's not in time for Christmas really... looks like a terrific film though.

the film completely skips over both the reunion LPs - there's a decent look at the reunion (and the lead up to it) but only it mentions the tours.

I loved the film. You could tell the budget wasn't massive.I saw it at the Melbourne Film Festival and it felt like the crowd was there to cheer on a football team - there was some serious hero worship in audience!! Yeah I knew most of the story (but not as much as the hardest of hardcore fans) but its great to see the story on film. And more importantly it'll live out there for those who dont know the band to get turned onto the music.

Hey Zenta138,

You don't have an extra ticket, do you? Or know how I could get one? They were sold out when I tried. I got one for the October 23 Living Histories show at the Majestic.
Thanks, Steve

Just saw it last night! Liked it a lot!

Spoliers ahead:
The visual storytelling was very loose (no pun intended) with concert and interview footage interspersed with clips from old movies, tv and cartoons of our heroes. I especially liked the punk band montage.
Iggy is in storyteller mode throughout, which is always enjoyable; sadly Scott's interviews were filmed after his stroke, so his time on screen is limited and kind of hard to watch. Ron's interview footage is mainly from the 80s and the Escaped Maniacs gazebo interview. A picture of James from his Sony exec days got quite a reaction from the audience.
Almost all former Stooges are mentioned, and though there is a lot we've heard before, some anecdotes were new to me (including details on Dave's death).
There was also more time dedicated to what led to the reunion reunification than I expected (lots of love for J. Mascis). The obvious conclusion is the rockhall induction ceremony with Iggy basically giving the finger to everybody. What a fitting ending.

Not sure about unreleased footage, but what we do get is an upgrade on old footage (Delta Pops, Grande Ballroom, Crosley Field, Goose Lake, St. Louis, Academy of Music), and although there isn't THAT much of it, it looks glorious on the big screen (to my eyes anyway). There was no "new" music (re: Asheton demos).
Stay for the credits for a lot (if not all) of the St. Louis footage in superior quality!!!

I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, but I genuinely enjoyed it a lot.
I'm wondering if people not familiar with the band get anything out of it, but the festival audience at my screening seemed to enjoy it.
Overall it's a fun watch that leaves you wanting more (I would gladly watch a 5 hour version).

Gonna see it again on Thursday!

How extensive is the St. Louis Aug 1973 footage? Is it properly dubbed?

Ivan Kral shot 9 minutes of Academy of Music 31 Dec 1973 (silent Super8 mm footage). Is this dubbed OK?

A shame about the Asheton Demos, Jim did say it was going to be used in the film some years ago. I was also hoping to see more of the 1970 Daniels Den footage but maybe the silly money wanted for it prevented that.

I know I'm going to love the film though!

PostSubject: Re: Stooges film - Gimme Danger    Stooges film - Gimme Danger - Page 4 Icon_minitimeMon Oct 24, 2016 12:47 pm

The St. Louis footage is shown alongside the movie's credits, so it's somewhat obstructed and not properly dubbed (the studio version of 1969 is played).
After rewatching the Raw Power doc yesterday I have to say that the quality of the St. Louis footage in Gimme Danger is infinitely better.

There is very little of the Academy of Music footage, just a few seconds here and there, not dubbed either. The only concert footage with its actual audio is from Crosley Field (no surprise) and a little bit from Goose Lake if I remember correctly.

I hope I didn't get your hopes up too high.
