Ahhh, Iggy is such a fabulous interviewee, or at least he was in his heyday.
I've been trawling YouTube for classic interviews with the Raw Iguana, and here's my top three:
Iggy Pop on French TV 1977:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKXU-KFwAlk"It's important to be naked?" Has to be seen to be believed. Possibly more entertaining than the Molly Meldrum interview (see below), this is perhaps Iggy's freakiest interview ever. Certainly, Yves Mourousi handles the bizarre Mr Pop with considerably more aplomb than the avuncular (and very very annoyed) Mr Meldrum does.
Iggy Pop on Countdown 1979:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKWRYQctTKI"Hiya dogface!" Iggy nails it! Glorious interview in every way, from Iggy's spot-on assessment of Molly's good looks, to his mockery of Aussie accents, to Molly falling for the old "what's that on your shirt?" trick and getting seriously angered at Iggy's constant baiting ("Iggy, can you answer these questions properly?'), to Iggy's performance afterwards... Watch for the moment when Iggy spits in the crowd; it's easy to miss, but if you turn the sound up, you can hear him make the noise as well as the crowd's disgusted reaction. Magnificent performance from the KING OF POP.
Iggy Pop interview on the Tom Snyder Show 1980:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CxyDX8kN6s"Why are you bleeding?", Tom Snyder asks. F****** hell. Iggy looks like Ben Cousins (Australian footballer) on smack here. Missing tooth, busted lip, bleeding gums - but toned and super fit. So shabby, but so compelling. What the hell happened to the Ig before he did this interview? According to some accounts, we know he used to get the crap beaten out of him with regularity at this stage of his career... maybe this chat happened just after one of those late-night carpark 'touch ups'....
