Shortly after this Scott Asheton replaced the drummer and the quartet toured a complete set of Stooges numbers. It was this group that Iggy kept stumbling across on the European Festival circuit which made him realise that a whole set of Stooges songs, played by two of the Stooges was actually going down extremely well, in some cases better than his own material. So we really have J Mascis to thank for inspiring the reformation of The Stooges in 2003. Cheers, Richard

Richard,
I am going to have to agree to disagree with you there.
I think we have Ron and particularly Scott to thank for the reunion. Scott had been contacting Iggy over the years about getting back together long before this tour.
Just giving credit where credit is due.
Goran,
Thanks for the video. It's wonderful!

Natalie, I know that Ron and Scott in particular had suggested a Stooges reunion at various times over the years and I'm not trying to downplay their enthusiasm and drive to get the band back together but it seems to me that Iggy was only finally convinced of the wisdom of regrouping after he'd seen how well the Mascis Asheton Asheton Watt shows had been received. Quite why it took Iggy so long to realise that Ron and Scott still had that drive is frankly baffling, but it seems like it took the energy and success of the Mascis shows to make him see the light. And of course the success of these shows was in no small part due to the continued power of the Ashetons and Mike Watt's peerless bass playing - hence his inclusion in the 2003 Stooges too. Cheers, Richard

Great stuff Goran! Many thanks for posting!
Re the reunion. I saw Ron with J.Mascis & The Fog, and also the Asheton/Asheton/Mascis/Watt line-up. And I'd say that the amazing reaction both those line-ups got, but especially once Scott was aboard, had everything to do with Iggy's sudden change of heart.
As long as Iggy was the sole ex-Stooge with an on-going solo career, he never had any interest in reforming, as Scott's many attempts show. But as soon as the Asheton's started touring Stooges songs, to good size crowds and rave reviews, and with no one seemingly much concerned by Iggy's absence, he suddenly developed a keen interest in the idea.
