Different opinions mean a thread is flamed? The opinions here do cross over from thread to thread but that applies to everyone.

Oh look everyone - Petrie's got a sidekick - just like the puppet in his avatar! Probably just what he always wanted, someone who agrees with everything he says and thinks, no matter how ludicrous or pompous it sounds. My word, you'll probably laugh at his dumb jokes too. Together, you a Petrie can fight ignorance and misunderstanding like two caped crusaders; I bet you've got the costumes picked out already. Taking the world by storm - Petrie and his little sidekick - PuppetBoy.
Petrie & PuppetBoy - this is fuckin' awesome.

Of the '72 demos, two feature straight lifts from other peoples songs, and it's a bit strange, considering that Jeff Beck never influenced James Williamson's playing, that the other straight lift is from ... another Jeff Beck era Yardbirds song?!
[/quote]
'Sick of You' got me into the Yardbirds! Was listening to John Peel back in the day & he played 'Happenings' by the Yardbirds - of course I recognised the riff, got interested etc.
What's the other Yardbirds song you mention though, that JW was influenced/not influenced by?

Fighting the forces of mental retardation like MJG and his henchman Radio the Turdman (see I can be immature too, still its a step up from "Pee Tree") since 1973.
I don't agree with everything Petrie says, hell I agree with you on some points but what you have done is start some twisted vendetta because someone disagrees with you on a forum. And I am going to back them up if I think they deserve to be. You did the same with me on the Ron thread. You seem to have a problem with me as I don't want to kiss Iggy's orange arse - as you would do if you were one of the crowd in your avatar (see I can make references to avatars too!). What I last said was silly, but at least it got through to you. These accusations of flaming are hilarious as YOU started posting the names of shit 80s bands in an attempt to be funny when someone new to the forum made a decent point.
I believe you were the one who started being ignorant by claming that James had no Jeff Beck influence and said this furiously, seriously listen to his work in the Yardbirds. Then when you found a quote that said he had listened to him you said that James sounded nothing like him, as James had also said this. You shouldn't take this word for word, as Ziggy said, musicians lie to make themselves look good. Williamson is a great guitarist but by no means an innovator, just a faster Keith Richards or Jeff Beck but a great guitarist none the less.

As far as musical influences go, Williamson's friends & mentors during hisTexas/Michigan adolescence probably had more of an influence than Beck etc. See the excellent Mike Watt interview for details.
Sorry ... back to flinging poo.

Questions : Who doesn't think S&D is a "punk" attempt to do something similar to the Chuck Berry gimmick riff ? And who doesn't think James Williamson brought back the "old" rock and roll in the Stooges after the free/funk sound of Fun House (this difference have always been my own artistical interpretation of the changes of basse/drum mix') ?

I'm sorry MJG, I had no idea until today just how sensitive your feelings were, re "flaming". I'm still a bit confused by your seemingly having "flamed" this thread long before I got here, or even what in my original post could be considered "flaming", but anyway ...
As a little token of my affection, and an olive branch held out between us, here's something I thought you might like to take back to your Johnny Thunders forum.

Point #1 - disagreeing with someone is fine. Calling them ignorant as a result of disagreeing is not fine. That's where this all started. Petrie made an asshole comment (not so unusual - we all do it from time to time) and then failed to see the desire someone might have for calling him on it. From their - it's careened out of control
Point #2 - Jeff Beck. I'm not in disagreement over whether Jeff Beck was an influence on James Williamson. Whether or not James SOUNDS like Jeff was what the original disagreement was about. From there it's been twisted and I had no small part in allowing it to happen.
Apologies to all witnesses that had to endure this - especially Petrie and PuppetBoy.

You got called "ignorant" but only after you made a string of sarcastic comments. If you can't take being insulted then don't act like an arse. Seperate different opinions and personal attacks. If someone disagrees with you, you seem to feel you must insulpersonally insult them. You did this with me on the Ron thread.
As for your claim that it was about if James and Beck sounded alike...well no, you said that Beck couldn't have influenced James. And they do sound alike, different sure but similar.
"Can you draw a compositional comparison to Beck, or is it the technical virtuosity you're referring to?
Last time I checked, Beck doesn't even use a fucking pick - and James' playing is based on a lightning fast strum hand....with a pick. Jeff uses the tremolo bar like a separate instrument, whereas James doesn't use a tremolo at all. James plays riffs, whereas Jeff plays single note speed runs....shall I continue, or has it become obvious again that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about and just camp out here to make people look inferior with your witty and engaging commentary?"

No matter which way you may want to slice it now, I'd say that "ignorant" is a pretty fair description of someone who mouths off about something they clearly know absolutely nothing about, and then compounds that by getting abusive with anyone who won't agree with them.
But just in case you still don't get it, listen to the song posted above, and then point out where "Beck doesn't even use a fucking pick", "Jeff uses the tremolo bar like a separate instrument", or "Jeff plays single note speed runs" as opposed to riffs.
When you're done with that, listen for the part where James whose "playing is based on a lightning fast strum hand....with a pick", gets himself a new arsehole torn at what you seem to think was his own personal invention.
One last thing, all this sudden back pedaling re JB wouldn't have anything to do with Larry Fine's post in the "Dolls Vs The Stooges" thread, would it?

Petrie - how do[i] you find the time to be such a prick. It's amazing, you've really got some skill at this. It's obvious that you've been sharpening your knives for years. You don't by chance work for FOX News do you? Glenn Beck could really use someone like you.
The clip you included is great. Doesn't sound anything like James Williamson. Maybe you should ease up on the grass and start your prozac meds again, I think that ringing in your ears is distorting your ability to hear correctly.
Regarding Larry's post - no, hadn't read it till just now. But I do have to agree with him. I don't hear Jeff Beck in James' playing from '73 either (apparently i'm not alone...huh). Which was my original point - and of course, the launching pad for your assholishness to try to slash and burn yet another poster.
I'm done with this and done with you - it's boring. You're boring. And besides, we all know you (or PuppetBoy) MUST have the last word so if I continue defending...well....it goes on forever. Go ahead - prove us wrong - I dare you.
