| Don't know if this has been mentioned before. Saw it today in local record store. Iggy mix on vinyl for the first time? http://www.soundstagedirect.com/iggy-pop-raw-power-remastered-180-gram-vinyl-lp.shtmlquote: About this title: 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - 2 LPs The 2010 2LP edition of "Raw Power" on Music on Vinyl contains 2 different versions of this rock-milestone. | This is pretty strange. My question is whether the Iggy mix is overly hot on vinyl like on CD. Anyone know? | |

My guess is that it can't possibly be as hot on vinyl or the stylus would jump like hell.

| If it has the Iggymix in "undistorted" (if that even exists and the clipping was not already produced when mixing, i.e. pre-master ) ... I might consider buying it. |

| long time trawler, first time poster - hello!
the vinyl sample wav sure does look promising, although I'm pretty certain a vinyl issue in 2010 would come from a digital remaster, so in this case - bring on the listening party!

You're probably right, but even made from the same source, a vinyl rip sounds different from the CD version (I didn't say it sounds better). If you want to check it out, here's a sample from S&D (30 sec of 1997 CD, then 30 sec of 2010 LP rip) (Dear HL, this is just a sample, please don't delete this post !) http://rapidshare.com/files/406985188/S_D_Ig_Remix_1997_CD_then_2010_LP.flac.htmlMy English is too bad to explain what I hear, but there's a difference between CD and vinyl (and I like vinyl more). But the cover of the 2010 2LP set sucks (looks like a 3rd generation scan):

| On this topic JP, I'm assuming the vinyl version, while taken from the same master mixes as the CD version, might not be the same master. Going back to the S&D waveform, it's very similar to that of the Life Aquatic and Million In Prizes versions which are definitely the Iggy remixes. I don't know much about vinyl mastering but, as I understand it, it's a significantly different process from CD mastering. I believe the vinyl pressing is a completely different master but taken from the same mixes used for the Iggy remix CD.
Sorry if I'm being kinda redundant, I'm a little flustered at the moment. Just got to speak with a producer I've been trying to get in touch with for a while and my mind is still racing!

Ouch! Wall to wall clipping. Who mastered that CD? Looks like another victim of the old 'Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Loudness wars.

Supposedly that version is a hint less distorted than his initial master. The CD is actually considered the loudest release in existence, or at least it was in 1997.

| So, is the Sundazed vinyl release of RP taken fro the original Bowie mixes or from Iggy's?

The CD is actually considered the loudest release in existence, or at least it was in 1997. What did Iggy say on the back? 'Everything's still in the red'. A very analogue idea. He could not know that that concept doesn't work in digital recording. - ElRoi wrote:

ElRoi. What do you mean? All three versions? Don't the 2LP and Sundazed both feature the same Bowie mix. - stooge wrote:

I think that's why I hate so much music these days, almost everything sounds like crap now. One guy John Diamond even claims that listening to digital audio makes people ill. Lou Reed apparently refuses to use compression at the mastering stage of his CDs.

ElRoi. What do you mean? All three versions? Don't the 2LP and Sundazed both feature the same Bowie mix. Well, I assume that the Sundazed release came from the original mastering of the Bowie-mix and the 2 LP release is from the newly remastered Bowie mix along with the Iggy remastering, correct? So that would be three different mastering versions. I may be wrong, but that is what I have gathered from all this.

| Not really "another version," rather than both re-mastering's available on analog vinyl instead of digital CD. I don't really see this as some sort of money making farce, rather than giving people who like vinyl the opportunity to have one of the greatest albums of all time, in all its various sonic states and in the medium they prefer. Do you really think they are getting rich off of this? If you don't like it on moral grounds then don't buy it. | |
