I just read an article in the swedish national daily paper Dagens Nyheter about Iggy and Bowie in Berlin and their inspiration to their covers from an artist called Erich Heckel.

Im not sure if that are common knowledge of the Iggy and Bowie fans? I never heard of it before, beeing a fan for 25 years or so.

It was pretty obvious when noticed it, and I put it up in the blogg: http://www.metrobloggen.se/jsp/public/permalink.jsp?article=19.5129510

The article I got it from are located here (in Swedish): http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=2198&a=841490

Are there any other so obvious inspirations for the Stooges and/or Iggy album covers?

Yeah I read earlier that Erich Heckel had a drawing made with a figure
standing in the same bodyposition as Iggy did later on the Idiot album.

The cover of Bowie on that page was not inspired on Erich Heckels work but on Egon Schiele..that painting below is from him. The typical handmoves is something what Schiele was working on..coming from a special movement philosophy in the danceworld.

THe Heckel picture is called Roquairol and was a portrait of his mentally deranged friend, Ernst Kirchner.

(looks a bit like Nick Cave, don't he?)

Iggy borrowed his girlfriend's jacket for the shot, by ANdy Kent.

There are pix of Bowie's favouirte museum, whcih is devoted to the Bruecke movement and other haunts here:

It's an interesting period in Iggy's career. Fun to read about that time, hear interviews and see pictures of the places stayed in Berlin.
The atmosphere of all of it comes clearly through in the music on The Idiot album.

I keep this idea it was not really Iggy's thing there in Berlin...even if he says he had one of the best times in his live there.
Simply because Iggy in his career, didn't stick much to that European moody culture and music influence from the Berlin time.
All was much more Bowie's thing. Iggy also said, that after his relationship with Esther there wasn't much keeping him in Berlin.

I tend to believe Iggy was really extremely influenced by David his ideas, tastes music etc. in that time...much more maybe than he even would like to admit. And it's doubtable if the question could be answered; what finally really Iggy his thing/culture is. The answer maybe would have a lot more in common with South American, tribal and voodoo culture (+music) influences probably...but there is also the Detroit blues culture... and what about American biker culture and it's influence What a Face ... etc. etc.

hmmm...think now I'm getting of topic scratch again

That's fascinating. I was pretty sure that there was a link between the "Idiot" and "Heroes" photos, especially given the proximity of their releases, but I didn't know about the Heckel portrait. Berlin is such an interesting musical period for both Bowie and Pop.
