Comments:
The list does not specify how the Stooges were billed. They were known as The Psychedelic Stooges until Oct 1969. From late 1970 or so, the billing was often Iggy and The Stooges. In 1972, 1973, and 1974 it was sometimes just Iggy Pop.

List compiled by Per Nilsen and Jim Lahde.

This is listed as a 1970 gig:
17 Apr Opera House, Detroit, MI (Alice Cooper on bill, Jam Band) Check this out it might have been only Alice Cooper

I think it's mistaken for the 1971 gig on that precise date (for which I have reviews from Chicago newspapers).

If the 1971 gig w/o Iggy was indeed at Wampler's Lake's Pavilion, it was more than likely this (scheduled) gig:

24 July Pavilion, Wampler’s Lake, MI [Cancelled.]

Should add in brackets that 29 Dec 1969 Chicago was filmed by a team of Chicago filmmakers - might still be in existence today. Jimmy Silver has talked about how they shot the entire gig and had people helping w. changing film rolls. That'd be quite a find! Per

If professionally done, could we dare hope there would be sound too... Would they have been playing stuff from the 1st album or had they moved on to Funhouse tunes at this stage?

I think Boston College Stadium should be added. Natalie confirmed that show. Long Island is already on the list. Whisky was cancelled, I'm pretty sure (they played there earlier in 1970). Per

Paul,

Wow, I forgot that Elektra used to do this newsletter. Did you save them all these years?

The Stooges were featured in a few of these newsletter. Do you have any other issues?

Thank for the memory!

Also as a sidenote. The Stooges played the Whiskey in late April or May of 1970 before recording Funhouse. They also played San Fran with Alice Cooper, etc. This could be an allusion to those very gigs.

The Touch journal mention of the Stooges at Whisky is clearly a reference to the late April/early May gigs, as they also talk about the planned recording of FH. We've never seens any documentation of the September 1970 Whisky gigs also happening. But you never know.

Hi Per

I'm making no claims for the 8th & 9th one way or the other. All I'd have to go on is that issue of Touch which shows them upcoming, and a site on the internet, that I can't find right now, which shows those dates as having been played by other bands. That's no better a call than "heads or tails?" I mentioned the past tense/future tense just in confirmation of what you were saying about them playing there "earlier in 1970".

Re Asbury Park on the 15th, Jim told me about the confirmations for that show, and they don't get much better than that. But I typed "Asbury Park N.J" and "Long Island Arena, Commack" into an online journey planner and it gave a distance of 110 miles. Maybe I did it wrong somehow, but if not they seem unlikely to be the same show by different names.

Did some homework and came up with this.
Whiskey A Go-Go, 1970
Sept. 6-8 - Buddy Miles and Second Coming
Sept. 9-13 - Chicken Shack
Sept. 16-20 - Amboy Dukes.
No mention of da Stooges.

The published Whisky A Gogo gig site online is notoriously inaccurate. Check different years: they transpose a lot of 'em. Also, a showcase may not be listed as a gig.

All dates courtesy of Billboard Magazine, make of them what you will. The Whiskey reviews are interesting just because of the time they were published, annoyingly they don't give exact dates for the shows.

Issue dated May 30, 1970 ...

From "The Music Capitals Of The World" column

"Chicago ... May 22 show at Aragon, sponsored by American Tribal Productions, featured Windfall's Mountain, Probe's Litter, Capitol's Bob Seger System and Blood Rock, plus Elektra's Stooges"

Issue dated April 10, 1971 ...

"From The Music Capitals Of The World" column

"A new ro?? ballroom is being planned with late April opening expected he??. To be called the Vanity Ballroom, it will be the scene of the Stooges return to the stage after a five month lay off Thursday (15). " ( Presumably the missing letters make the words "rock" and "here")

Issue dated May 5, 1973 ...

In the "Who-Where-When" column

"Iggy Pop (Columbia): Carnegie Hall, N.Y., May 15"

Issue dated July 7, 1973 ...

From the "Inside Track" column

"Second Iggy and the Stooges set at the Whiskey A Go Go on saturday was cancelled after audience enthusiasts caused a wrenched back for the singer, The Detroit group attracted the biggest turnaway crowd in years and also presented CBS/Records Group president Goddard Lieberson with an opportunity to make his West Coast partying come-back at a reception for the group. Iggy's new manager is Jeff Wald, manager/husband off Helen Reddy.

Issue dated September 8, 1973 ...

From the "Who-Where-When" column

"Iggy Pop (Columbia): State Theatre, Toledo, Ohio, Sept. 10"

Issue dated Nov 3, 1973 ...

"Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Whiskey A Go Go, Los Angeles"

"Iggy didn't spill any of his blood at this set so I assume he was quieter than usual. His costume was a spangled loin cloth and high black boots. The audience knew what to do and held him over their heads when he flung himself at them. No recent scars were showing.

As for the music, well ... Alice Cooper's early-career sets were even more rudimentary. What Iggy, who records for Columbia, probably needs is a really strong producer to weed the self-indulgence from his sound. But even as is, you can't beat Iggy & the Stooges for tacky glitter-rock entertainment value."

Issue dated December 15th, 1973 ...

In the "late News" column

"Rodney Bingenheimer's Disco in Hollywood has it's first live shows, with Iggy Pop followed by David Cassidy's 16-year-old brother Sean, new idol of the teenie magazines"

And no, I didn't make the Carnegie Hall one up. Very Happy
