It took some time and plenty of passion to get this done.
Per Nilsen and myself (Jim Lahde of Wixom, Michigan) compiled this some
years ago. It was understood not to unveil it as Per was working on a book.
But since Trynka's fine book came out out there's not too many stones
left untouched. Thus I thought this would be a nice addition to the board.

Comments:
The list does not specify how the Stooges were billed. They were known as The Psychedelic Stooges until Oct 1969. From late 1970 or so, the billing was often Iggy and The Stooges. In 1972, 1973, and 1974 it was sometimes just Iggy Pop.

In terms of photos, I don't have anything that isn't already posted on this board. Fact is I was born a generation too late. All the cool burnouts in my neighborhood had older siblings who loved this band, yet when I was seven the Sex Pistols broke. I had heard about them and was introduced to them at 15 or 16 (1985-86). Since then I have studied microfilm seeking out their history.
God bless the Stooges.

I also missed a date.
The Stooges played Guelph, Canada
between May 15 and May 21 of 1971.
The show was shutdown by the Guelph University president because it was too loud and was being played near his residence. I also believe a roadie got too rowdy (tequila) and had fell from the upper scaffolding.

I don't have film footage either.
But I did have a gig list. So I went to the University library, looked up old newspaper microfilm that fit in with certain dates and nailed down dates. Fanzines are also on film. Yet there are certain dates that have been near impossible to find.
For example - The Stooges played the Action House in Long Island in the fall of 1970. I can't find that gig. They played Cherry Hill, New Jersey in late 1973, it's the Double Danger gig. I also can't find that date. But I do know this- they played "I wanna be your dog" for a Philadelphia TV station in 1969 live. It was either aired or filed away. No one knows what happened to the footage. This was footage of the band before their first album or soon thereafter. If memory serves me right it was the day of or the day before they played the Electric Factory with Buddy Miles.

In terms of info, there's so much to this band.
There's three different incarnations of it, beginning in 1966 or 67.
To attempt to delve into all the machinations of where they come from as individuals to the scene they grew up in and around to how they grew is not possible to do in a few words. The 1960s, Ann Arbor-elitism, politics, Vietnam, Michigan-based rock and roll competition, drugs and all the variables that this band was a product of cannot be duly noted in short form. To put things into context the band's first album came out the same week as Woodstock took place. The Hippie movement didn't last much longer, yet The Stooges certainly didn't make too much sense then. Look at 'em now though. They were 20 years ahead of their time.

Great list, I live in north Florida, I'll try and find out some more info about the Jax and Daytona dates.

Nice one Jim. I read something some time ago about Per re-releasing his Wild One book with updated info, so I sold my copy. Is this not going to happen now because of Paul T's book?

My personal view is that Per's book while not being quite as in depth as Paul's, was great for looking up things again and again with relevant pictures on every page, etc. I for one would welcome it's re-release.

In your research I wonder if you've come across what live/demo Stooges tapes are out there but yet to be released onto trader networks? Maybe Richard Adams can add to this too?


As far as I know there are tapes out there of:

Stooges 1st album Outtakes - (further to those on the Rhino 2CD)
Stooges - Unganos 1970 (not sure which date)
Stooges - Chicago 1971 (I'm guessing 17 April - from your list)
Stooges - Birmingham 1971 (known to exist in 1979 - according to liner notes on Matt Gimmick's Detroit Renaissance EP)

I've been trying to track down Matt Gimmick with no success, emailing any tenuous link to him on the web (anyone help??)

I emailed Leni Sinclair last month - she's got a ton of MC5 stuff but just a few Stooges photos, no vid or audio.

I recently had some correspondence with the owner of Unganos + other early outtakes and was told negotiations for it's release are ongoing.

yeh i'd definitly buy The Wild One, borrowed if off a friend and it was a great book, i'd welcome a rerelease too!

also, yeh i hope rhino get into the mix as well, no offense to easyaction, cos theyre boxsets are great, but rhino always does a good job, the complete funhouse was a great boxset and the rereleases of the first two albums are some of the best put together CDs ive ever seen, in regard to their look ad content, liner notes (not to mention the debuts extra CD)

The last time I corresponded with Per was right after the release of Easy Action's Heavy Liquid set. Before that he was talking about putting out a re-release of "The Wild One" with more updated information, but that's where it ended. As of now I don't know what he's doing, but I'm sure he's busy doing something as he's a go-getting dude.
As for tapes, I have heard of the Ungano's tape and the Chicago 71 tape. I think Danny Fields had them. What he's done with them I don't know, but hope they find their way out soon as they'd be great to hear. The Matt Gimmick 71 tape I have also heard of, yet much less. I think I read about it in passing one time and that's it. I used to own Matt Gimmick's 1979 Detroit Rennaissance tape with Fresh Rag and another song, both of which were performed by Gimmick prior to that festival. I know nothing of outtakes from the first album as that's new to me.

The Wild One Per's excellent 1986 book on Iggy was pretty much the definitive volume for years and years.
It seems that Per tried to interest publishers in an updated version a few years back but with no success.
When I decided to write The Complete Iggy Pop I used Per's book as a benchmark, and attempted to come up with a book that I wanted to read, one that I hoped people would consult and return to as often as I had with The Wild One.
Per's book had not ben updated since 1988's second edition and I was disappointed with Joe Ambrose's biography (not enough detail for my liking, and it seemed to me that Ambrose didn't like his subject very much!) so that's when I decided to write The Complete Iggy Pop. This was before Paul Trynka's superb Open Up And Bleed came out - if I'd known about Paul's definitive biography I would probably have been put off doing mine (as I reckon it will be impossible to top Open Up And Bleed) even though my book is far more about the songs and the tours, more facts and figures based.
Sadly, both time constraints and a limited word count (which I had already gone way over) prevented me from finishing a complete gig list which is something I really wanted to include. The list above is exactly what I wish I had stuck out for and pushed to include in my book as I find that sort of detail fascinating.
I think, if we all pull together, we could easily compile the definitive gig list for the rest of Iggy's career. That's what the internet should be about - people from all over the world pooling their information.
I have quite a lot of detail from 1977 onwards and The Wild One has virtually every gig listed until 1987. From around 1999 I think I have a complete list, but it's the 1990's that I ran out of time to complete.
I'll gather up my gig lists over the next few days and make available what I have - maybe the rest of you can fill in the gaps (fairly large in places...)
Once again, hats off to Jim and Per for getting all this information together in the first place!

To put things into context the band's first album came out the same week as Woodstock took place. The Hippie movement didn't last much longer, yet The Stooges certainly didn't make too much sense then. Look at 'em now though. They were 20 years ahead of their time.

don't know about their having been twenty years ahead of their time tho, it just seems to me like they've never really fitted in, somehow, people STILL don't really know how to treat them. That's my feeling on it anyway. Sure they've been credited with helping to invent punk rock (however inadvertently) but that doesn't really begin to do them justice either.
anyway I'm rambling on again ... it's just that all this info is SOO impressive.
