I know there's been enough doom and gloom recently but this date always sticks in my memory since I became a Stooges, and particularly Dave Alexander fan. To think it's been 34 years since Dave died .... just too long a time...altho of course he left an incredible legacy on just two records I really do wish he could've done even more. And to think that his old buddy Ron Asheton's probably with him now...

love ya Dave...you always fascinate the hell out of me

i know, i wish there was some video, or even audio of what he sounds like. i know of none except for "maybe"(it might not even be) at the very end of the gooselake clip when the bass cuts out. it might be him very distantly saying something.

He might have been one of the voices on that "boxing ring" intro to the alternate TV Eye...

I was referring to the backing voices- all the boos and cat calls. There was more than one person in those. I definitely thought I heard Ron & Scott...

R.I.P. Dave

I've spent most of today listening to "Fun House". I'd never picked up before that Dave's basslines tend to change when Ron solos. And in "L.A. Blues" where he just does those bass runs, the floor moves its unbelievable. "Dirt" of course goes without saying, its the highlight of the album which is ssaying something.

He's just so overlooked, its shameful. Him and Scott linked together so well. Of course Dave also had the look. I just wish that he'd played with other bands after The Stooges.

But he left us with two faultless, perfect albums. Smile

Didn't he just.

Did he or did he not come up with the riff to Little Doll? (based on Pharoah Sanders of course) - wish I knew! Because that to me is the single best example of his playing...the most overwhelmingly hypnotic anyway

HJW just cleared me up on that one Smile I thought it was Ravi Shankar but it wasn't, it was taken from "Upper Egypt, Lower Egypt" by Pharoah Sanders. Of course it was expanded on and turned into something fantastic rather than the 10 seconds it appears in out of the 10 minute song by Sanders.

yeh, just saw that, trust me to complicate matters starting the same discussion on two different threads

funny to think I haven't actually heard Ravi Shankar yet.Not sat down to actually listen I mean

As I've said before, I like it about Dave that he was into 'Eastern' stuff...maybe it was just a passing phase or something tho

i'd say it was, well i suppose how do we know, but i know i got into that kind of music and other religions, not practicing but learngin about other religions, because of dave and the stooges, so it mightve come around that way, because of brian jones or something, never know, but thats where most of my inspiration comes from, "...if stooges did it" lol

All that spiritualist stuff comes up again with Dave too, theosophy and all that, influence of 'Eastern' religions and that Blavatsky woman etc.
of course the Beatles influence on Dave too, the sitar-playing George Harrison...Dave and Ron really were into the Beatles

I don't think so he seemed pretty deep into Eastern stuff, you can hear that influence on not only "We Will Fall" but "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "T.V. Eye" as well.

I think Dave had a very strong influence on moving The Stooges into jazz and funk territory to when you listen to his style of playing on "Little Doll", "Dirt" and "Fun House". When Dave left the jazz influence seemed to be there for a while but the 1971 stuff shows The Stooges became a still brilliant but more conventional rock band.

He really is overlooked way to often. His style was so unique, "Dirt" for instance is such an emotive song yet its not a typical sad song at all. And the song "Fun House", hell its a whole genre of music by it's self.

He was into Eastern ideas,I guess the Beatles/Harrison influence apart from anything else like I just said, all that reading too...another thing I love about him, I can only guess who or what else influenced him!

he'll always be kinda overlooked I guess. even the Ashetons still are

When you had a frontman as crazy as Iggy the rest of band would always be overlooked I guess.

Its not fair that Ron and Dave are gone while Phil Collins still lives.
