| I figured it wasn't Iggy's viewpoint but I didn't know it was about George Dubbya, it makes more sense now. | |

: why ever not? He knows that you can have more than one interpretation of a song and what's with the 'duh' comment? and JW, you're right I probably wouldn't mean it literally either if I sang it...

| i think its sarcastic, thats how i took it, i thought it was words coming from the mouth of the bushs etc, the warmongers ''my idea of fun is killing everyone''
i dont think its a metaphor either, i think its a joke almost, initially it hit me as ''this is supposed to be shocking'' - ironically i was more shocked that iggy was trying to shock lol

| I always took it quite another way, thought the whole thing was from just one viewpoint, Iggy's own, and I know I've read about him saying that line was metaphorical, of course it would help if I had the link.
I thought it being metaphorical would fit in more with the 'they steal your soul' and 'that is why I hate mankind' stuff. or is Bush meant to be saying that bit too Obviously I've got too much time to think about it. I'm out of this.

| i think its turning out to be quite a good song, lyrically, look at all of us trying to figure it out lol
i think you have a point nadja, esp if you read he meant it as a metaphor
i actually think 'they steal your soul' and 'i hate mankind' are quite literal, well steal your souls more figurative obviousy, but i think theyre really honest, and i think thats straight from iggy, not from a 'master of war' kinda person
havent listened to this in ages, im going to listen to it and ill post what i think again, need to listen to it

| I think iggy just wanted a "catchy" line, at concerts he mostly let someone from the audience sing that line.
Take *search and destroy* just those words, it's not much more "intelligent" if you put it that way.. |

| 'Search and Destroy' is more intriguing I think. It was realistic that he sang such a line in that period, take the drugs and total mess he lived in. This makes it acceptable to me. btw. Iggy got that line from a head in the Time magazine. The article was about the Vietnam war techniques like firefighting and napalm.

| yeah, zinzin and Nadja. I just ment the very three words... I heard the story (magazine title..) in an interview with Iggy- He took it *because* they're dumb in order to express criticism -and I guess he did the same with "My Idea Of Fun.." |

| BEST: (hard to pick just a few)
look into it later when the dust is clearing off the crater - Run Like a Villain
there's nothing left alive just a pair of glassy eyes - Gimmie Danger
I'm lookin' for the joke with a microscope - Repo Man
seize the world and turn it upside down and every stinking bum should wear a crown - Cry for Love
when your alarm clock beeps you turn into a creep carry on, modern guy - Modern Guy
WORST: I like spaghetti in tomato sauce - Boogie Boy
one of these days I'm gonna squeeze you just like a tomato - Pleasure

| some good examples there trailerborn
gimme danger was probably the first song that made me realise iggy was up there with the greats, he's very underrated, but like i said, the crap lyrics get in the way and people probably just forget how good he can be

| Iggy didn't really start with the crap lyrics until later in his solo career imo. Earlier on he had the Stooges & Bowie to keep him sharp. I think by the time he was with the Trolls he started consciously dumbing it down - perhaps to appeal to the 90's fratboy rape-rock crowd.
He's not up there with Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen, but I'd rate him with Zappa and Alice Cooper in terms of being a severely underrated lyricist.

| Personal fave:
I played tag in the auto graveyard, I looked up at the radio tower
I grabbed tit by the railroad tracks Concrete poured over steel grids
I pondered my fate while they built the interstate

| 'Trollin'' from 'The Weirdness' has Iggy's worst: My dick is turning into a tree. NO. JUST NO.

| Talking about a single number, I'll name V.I.P. Never was he more sarcastic than here. Talking about an album, I'll name most of the lyrics from Brick By Brick. | |
