| There's one important thing to keep in mind about Olympic. In the nineties the studio was gutted and the archives cleared. But nobody thought to contact the owners of the archived tapes before throwing them into the dumpster, so master session tapes of people like Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Led Zeppelin were lost forever.
If The Stooges had left any of their other tapes from the Olympic sessions in Olympic's archives, there's a good chance they ended life on the local council trash dump during the same purge.

| At least some of those tapes were actually fished out of the skip (dumpster) by someone with a better sense of history. Hence a lot of boot's from sessions recorded at Olympic. | |

Very true. The tragic thing is that although we know what was saved, we don't know exactly what was lost, and probably never will. What kind of nutjobs were they to do that?

Wow! Were did you hear that? If this is true, wonder if there is somebody who could confirm this? Anyone got some hints of somebody? I can try to ask James on his facebook, for starters... Aha. Just found this quote in 'Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell' by Dave Thompson: "My particular insanity bar was raised so high at that point, and nothing seemed bent enough. Ever. I liked the songs. We recorded things like 'Fresh Rag', 'Scene of the Crime' and 'Seach and Destroy'. And DeFries freaked. 'I would never allow you to put out anything like this. Aaarrrggghh!'"

| morepower, can you explain why you think there is a recording of "fresh rag"?
Dave Thompson only said there *was* one but it may have been deleted? Or do you know more than that?
Please let's not create more "legends" than there are already. |

Great find Mark! Seems like the one most probably to have the recordings(if existing) would have to be De Fries/Mainman or Dave Thompson. De Fries was from what I've heard quite a "capitalist", so If the recording still exists, one should think Mainman would be thinking of releasing it or part of it when demand is high enough.. Guess that demand for the Stooges should be at is peak now... Of course this is pure speculation. Anybody here who are in touch with De Fries or the Mainman company, so we can end this tormenting hunger?

Please let's not create more "legends" than there are already. I think you're right. Ron also said in an interview that they recorded "Nigger Man" but it was probably thrown out too. The "Raw Power" boxset was the one chance they really had to unearth some rare stuff, sadly it never happened. We should just be glad we've heard some of the 1972 demos, which survived only out of luck.

Not so sure it was the last chance. Rhino for one still sit on Unganos, and they still reprinted the whole 1'st album as cd1 in their box-set instead. The Raw power box could have contained some more rare studio takes if they wanted to and got em I'm sure, but wouldn't suprise me if they come up with a new "Raw Power Box 2 - The songs we wanted to make more money on" sometime. If that box included the Iggy-mix + 1 or 2 71 songs, I'm sure it would sell. We're talking about a lot of greed here.

| Put the blame where it deserves to be put: we all could have had the equivalent of THREE Raw Powers but for He Who Must Not Be Named. | |

We also know from Carlton's notes on HL, that several further versions of 'I Got A Right' were omitted from HL. Without listening through, I'm also not sure how much of an overlap there is between HL and the Bomp disc.
I think Tracks 4-5 (maybe 6 too) from the Bomp! disc are different to HL CD1. Track 6 of Bomp! is either the same or similar to Track 16 of HL CD1. Other tracks (excluding the final mixes) are the same, but mixed differently and are more complete - on HL.
