Subject: Raw Power - vinyl - PC 32111 or CBS 32083 reissue? Fri Jan 28, 2011 7:43 pm
Now I am choosing between Columbia PC 32111 and CBS 32083 from UK, which is a reissue. How is those two compared soundwise? Which to choose?
And is it possible that an LP does not have an inner sleeve at all? One seller sells one without an inner sleeve. I am new to vinyl, so I don't know - I always thought that there should be an inner sleeve of some kind - at least a plastic one...
................
Could please someone tell me whether the original Raw Power vinyl records had some kind of an inner sleeve? What was it like? And do the reissues have it? I am buying a reissue PC 32111, so I wonder whether it will have an inner sleeve. Also, what about an innersleeve in the Sundazed vinyl issue?

As far as I know, all original US pressings have the B&W inner sleeve shown below. Only some of the UK original CBS pressings have it (mine has a generic CBS inner sleeve, advertising for early 70s CBS releases). Don't know about the Sundazed. The 1976 PC 3211 US reissue doesn't have it. A late 80's australian reissue (Au-go-go label) have it (also includes a poster with Iggy & James Williamson).

Thanks. How do you think what type of an inner sleeve PC 32111 might have? Paper sleeve or a plastic sleeve?
Also I am currently chosing between Iggy Raw Power vinyl LP by Columbia PC 32111 and Sundazed. Which would you recommend? Not sure if Columbia is from 1976 or newer, but the stuff is in near mint condition. I've read that the quality of Sundazed vinyls is not so good. Is Columbia better?

My copy of PC 32111 has a plain white (paper) inner sleeve. I have mixed feelings about Sundazed LPs. A vinyl rip of Sundazed Raw Power LP was given to me by a forum member, and though it was made from analogue master tapes, I think it sounds worse than other (re)issues. Same for Funhouse, which sounds dry to my ears. Sundazed reissue of the first LP is much better (but not as good as the original Elektra US LP). Anyway, my copy of PC32111 sounds "OK", but the original US (or UK) sounds slightly better. You may also try the 2010 2xLPs set, which includes the original Bowie mix and Iggy remix (in better quality than the CD version). jpstooges

Thanks. How do you think: should I choose PC 32111 or Sundazed if I want a better sound? I cannot get KC32111 and I don't think I want the 2xLP set. So I have to choose between PC and SUndazed.
And also I heard that the vinyls themselves by Sundazed are pressed not as good as other labels, worse material.

I have PC 32111 and it sounds great. Sundazed often use vinyl that is not so good. Take the PC 32111.

What do you think of CBS 32083 from UK , which is a reissue, soundwise? Is it good? How's it compared to PC32111?

It's sample time! Shake Appeal Sundazed:
Shake Appeal PC 32 111:
Shake Appeal KC 32 111:
Shake Appeal CBS 32083:
And yes, vinyl LPs must have inner sleeves. A record without inner sleeve is bad news (careless handling).

Thanks for the info, guys.
jpstooges, I actually don't hear any difference in these samples. Of course, I am not that sensitive - I believe there may be difference, but I don't hear it. Only Sundazed sounds a bit different to me, and it actually sounds TO ME worse than the other three - I mean, I think it sounds muddier. I actually CAN hear differences between different issues of some other albums on CDs, so I am not that insensitive to details (although I'm not a pro), but in this case I just don't get the differences... (except the Sundazed). Maybe I've listened too little.

Andrius, if you can't hear differences between those tracks, that's good news: whatever you buy, you'll be happy with it! More seriously, there are differences, but they're subtle. Of course you can't hear them if you're listening to samples with crappy computer speakers. CBS 32083 is a bit boomy, PC 32 111 is better, but KC 32 111 has slightly better highs. None of them are bad, really, may be you should just buy the cheapest one you find...

Okay... I've got a rip of this KC 32111 vinyl, and it lacks clarity to my ears - much worse than Sundazed samples (from their internet site). What do YOU think of this?

The version you posted reminds me of a bad sounding vinyl rip I once downloaded from Avaxhome. It had bass boosted and reversed channels (check Gimme Danger: guitar intro is on right channel, unlike other versions). It's obviously been heavily EQ'd, and it doesn't sound good to my ears. Yes, Bowie mix of Search & Destroy lacks bass, but pushing that loudness button makes things worse. Bear in mind that what you'll hear "at home" might be very different from what people upload. Depending on your turntable, cartridge and phono stage, it might be better.. or worse. But even with cheap gear it won't sound as bad as this poorly homemade "re-mix".

Yes, it has been downloaded from Avax... Well, then my main concern is that the record I buy did not sound as bad as the one one Avax. If that one has been home-remixed, then all other vinyl versions will sound good. All the samples that you've provided, sound much better than this one, so I would be satisfied with any of them . Thanks!

I just found a "strange" Raw Power L.P.
It's spanish, with spanish written credits, and has some kind of light-purple colored vinyl. It's listed as CBS 65586.
But there's no way the thing dates back to 1973, everything from the paper sleeve to the vinyl is perfectly new and fresh... Does anybody knows if there is a pirate of the particular spanish edition in circulation ?

CBS 65586 was the number of the 1'st UK issue... sound fishy. Could you put up a picture of it Ziggy? Can't see the record from the link..
