| Recent email from Rhino - THE STOOGES HAVE SOME FUN Rhino Handmade Unveils Unreleased 1970 Show At Ungano’s With Performances Of Nearly Every Song From Fun House, Plus Two Previously Unheard Tracks 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions Tops Rhino Handmade Poll, Re-release Coming Of This Long Sold-Out, Seven-Disc Boxed Set
Rhino.com Pre-Order For Both Releases Begins October 25, Ships November 16
LOS ANGELES – To celebrate the release of Fun House in the summer of 1970, The Stooges brought the uncompromising ferocity of their second album to New York City and unleashed it within the cramped confines of Ungano’s, a hole-in-the-wall club on the Upper West Side. A reel-to-reel set up in the audience recorded the manic maelstrom as the band performed the entire album – except “L.A. Blues” – along with the until-now unreleased tracks “Have Some Fun” and “My Dream Is Dead.”
Rhino Handmade brings to light this legendary unreleased show in its entirety on a single disc accompanied by a poster, two glossy photos taken that night, and new liner notes composed by Lenny Kaye. Shipping November 16, HAVE SOME FUN: LIVE AT UNGANO’S will be available for pre-order on October 25 exclusively at www.rhino.com for $19.98.
The adrenalin-drenched set features singer Iggy Pop, guitarists Ron Asheton and Bill Cheatham, drummer Scott Asheton, bassist Zeke Zettner and saxophonist Steve Mackay. The band closes the show with a 10-minute-plus psychedelic, freak out jam featuring two unreleased tracks, “Have Some Fun” and “My Dream Is Dead.”
Musician and writer Lenny Kaye attended the show and transports you there in the album’s liner notes: “The sound comes in sheets of earsplitting noise, dense and bleating, as if a sheep is being led to slaughter. You can literally hear the ’60s gasping for breath, the totemic sacrifice of The Stooges.”
The same day HAVE SOME FUN will be released, Rhino Handmade will also rerelease 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions. This seven-disc boxed set topped Rhino Handmade’s poll earlier this year to determine which of the label’s sold-out titles to put back in print. The reissued collection – which will not be individually numbered, preserving the collectability of the initial release – will be offered in its original packaging for $119.98.
This Holy Grail among Handmade titles, the original 1999 pressing for The Complete Fun House Sessions was limited to 3,000 copies, contains 142 tracks (109 music and 33 studio dialogue) whose nearly eight hours document every take from every Fun House session, in order, exactly as The Stooges recorded them. The set includes six CDs packaged in standard jewel cases, each with an eight-page folder. The seventh is packaged in a die-cut cardboard sleeve as a replica of the original Elektra single for “Down On The Street” b/w “1970 (I Feel Alright).”
Rhino’s Stooges celebration began a few weeks ago with the release of both of the band’s Elektra records on 180-gram vinyl. Cut from the original analog masters, The Stooges and Fun House are both available now for a suggested list price of $17.98 each.
HAVE SOME FUN: LIVE AT UNGANO’S Track Listing 1. Going To Ungano’s 2. “Loose” 3. “Down On The Street” 4. “T.V. Eye” 5. “Dirt” 6. “1970” 7. “Fun House” 8. “Have Some Fun”/”My Dream Is Dead”

| Excellent news!! Unganos as a separate release!! I had visions of this being issued as part of some set that would mean we'd all have to buy Funhouse again just to get the live set. But thankfully good sense has prevailed. Do we have any indication of the sound quality of the Unganos recording? The info says it's a reel to reel audience recording, but how does it sound? Cheers, R | |

| Great news! Especially as Ungano's is a stand-alone release. (Fingers crossed Rhino's engineers put the tape on the spool the right way around..) | |

This is fantastic news, great year to be a fan of the Stooges.
And i'm also glad to see they are releasing them separately.
And good too that people can get a chance at purchasing this set.
Also wondering what the quality will be like - though its been mentioned its decent enough
thanks for posting this Larry, HJW

| I first heard about the Stooges playing at Unganos in 1986. There were so few pre '73 recordings in circulation in those days that I thought maybe nothing existed at all of those concerts. So to have this one show up after so long is incredible. Plus the fact that we will get to hear what the band sounded like with Bill Cheatham.
So I'm very pleased indeed that finally a document like this is happening. Who knows maybe a long lost recording from the Boston Tea Party from 1969 or another venue might show up? There is that 45 second clip of 'Freak' that exists so perhaps the whole concert exists that is the source of that?
In any case roll on Unganos, 40 years on!

| Frankly, after what happened to those who bought the first album reissue on rhino handmade, I'm less than thrilled at the idea to buy something to these guys. I think I will pass... I'm pretty upset by the conditions under witch this show and the Popped package are released : pretty hard to get and anything but cheap. | |

| It comes the 1986 VPRO doco. I think it might have been MC (?) who posted a link to it on the forum some months ago.
You can hear a lot of fast drumming and wah guitar on it - not great quality though - but fascinating to hear the Stooges from that stage of their work.

| I am not sure how I feel about the release of Unganos after the major screw up of Rhino's last release. It's one thing to make a mistake but quite another to refuse to correct that mistake while charging a hefty fee. I attended all the Unganos gigs both in February and in August. I can assure all of you that there were no songs titled "Have Some Fun/My Dream is Dead". From this title, I must presume that this song would be the one called "Way Down in Egypt" because Iggy sang "I'm Dead" several times at the end of it. For those of you that ordered the Popped package, I wrote about the gigs in one of the fanzines. It's a shame Rhino did not contact me as I could have assisted in getting all the song titles correct.
If the reissue of FunHouse is the same as the first one, just minus the numbering, that will be a joy to purchase.

Technically, I didn't get it. At least not originally. It was sent to a friend who is a writer and I can only assume that it went out to a mailing list of people who can help to publicize the release. Writers need to know what is coming out so that they can pitch stories to magazines, etc. and have time to get stories written and into the issue that most closely coincides with the release date of the product. My friend forwarded it to me. I'm on Rhino's generic mailing list, as well and I didn't get the email either. I did, however, remove all names of senders and recipients, etc. before I posted it on this thread - for obvious reasons. I can assure that the email is legit - not saying you were doubting its veracity. Just saying.

| Im looking forward to both Popped! and the Unganos show.My guess as to why Unganos wasnt slipped into the funhouse reissue,is that they already have the dies and tooling done for the packaging..to make it larger to add a extra disc, plus then the artwork needs to be redone...not cost effective. However,if you didnt get funhouse last time, nows your chance! I skipped lunch for 2 weeks to get a copy the first time around and dang if it wasnt worth it! Im also glad, and indeed we all should be,that Natalie is around to correct historic type mistakes,as with the Unganos live set (have some fun/my dream is dead) and Popped! will fill in a few blanks too,im sure.Hopefully other Stooges tapes will start surfacing, imagine a tea party show from 69...or the oft rumored "professionally recorded" (but nixed due to "poor performance") of the Academy of music show...or God help us all,the Tipton tapes!...so theres still some gems still out there..... As a side,is it just me,or should other classic albums be done in a "complete sessions" style like Funhouse...imagine BOC's "secret treaties" or Alice Coopers "Killer" done like that..id shell out for those!...of course,id shell out for the funhouse set on vinyl..which would be about a 16 record set... | |
