Beautiful book Robert. And some new info (to me anyway) included too: so Billy Cheatham is the wrestling announcer on T.V. Eye.

I received my copy of the book today. One word: SUPERB.

The photographs alone are worth the price.

I do have one beef about the 'Metallic KO' chapter. The myth is perpetuated that two complete Stooges shows are contained on the double 'Metallic 2xKO' This is not true. Those shows do not exist in complete form. The recording from October '73 is incomplete because the tape ran out during 'Open Up And Bleed'.
It is also stated that the February '74 show started with 'Heavy Liquid'. I was obviously not present at the time, but all previous shows began with 'Raw Power' and there is no reason to believe the final show was any different. 'Heavy Liquid' itself is incomplete due to unknown tape problems or cuts.

On a related subject, there is no way the February '74 show came from the fabled 4-track recording by Michael Tipton. I don't doubt that he did tape the show, but evidence points to 'Metallic KO' being taken from a normal soundboard tape.

Stoogesfan,

there is the myth as you say and then there is the reality.

Metallic K O in all it's many releases did come from Michael Tipton 's recordings. Michael taped both shows. One show was taped from the sound board and the other from two mics at both sides of the stage. BTW, Michael still has the original tapes. The tape that was sold to Skydog was a second generation cassette that James copied from Ron. Ron was the only one who hung on to the tape that Michael gave him.

There is a strong possibility the whole story in Michael's own words will be included in the book "the Stooges Live- Caught in the Act" that Per Nilsen, myself and a few others are in the process of writing now.

So, do you know if Michael Tipton will ever let the original tapes be used for a higher quality release of Metallic KO someday?

Hey Natalie,

I don't doubt your version for a moment, but my information comes partly from my personal experience with live sound engineering (not much, admittedly) and the rest from an interview with Iggy that appeared in a music publication many years ago where he stated that "Marc Zermati taped us from way back in the auditorium and approached James and myself about releasing it as a bootleg. I said no right away - you could hear the band making all these mistakes. Later on James sold him the rights to make some quick bread and Zermati pissed off to France where he figured I couldn't find him."

The acoustic qualities of the October show indicate the source microphone(s) being towards the rear of the venue. I would be interested to read Michael's version of where exactly he positioned his mics when he recorded the show. Incidentally, the write-up for one of the recent releases of the October show (I forget which) states that it was mastered "from Tipton's tapes". Do you know if this is true?

With the February show, my point was that it had not been a conventional 4-track recording as has been stated. I was always convinced it was a soundboard recording (now thankfully confirmed) due to the sound fluctuations as the sound engineer altered the faders to achieve 'room balance'.

Anyway, I look forward to the book you mention. Sounds good!

Sorry for going off topic!

ElRoi,

Michael never got a penny for MKO. I am sure if an offer was made, Michael would be happy to have his original recording used properly.

Stoogesfan,

I read that interview also and I laughed so hard, I cried. Michael and I have been friends since he joined the fan club. That is almost 40 years ago. I don't believe in telling stories out of school as the saying goes, but Michael and I just talked about this very subject on Friday when we had an hour long conversation.

There are typos in thing and steal and I can not seem to be able to correct them! Ugh!!

I don't want to steel Michael's thunder so I will let him tell his story when he is ready. One thong I can assure you is the tape sold was a copy of a copy of Michael's recording.

This is incredible information. Have you heard the original and if so, would it be safe to assume that the sound quality is significantly better than what has been previously released?

Yes, I would also like the answer to that question.

In addition, what happened to the 'missing' tracks from the February '74 show? Does Michael still have them?

Ron was very instrumental with shaping the vision of the book very early on, I think he would have really loved it. His presence became larger in the book because of his absence during the process.

But, you didn't ask me did you?

BTW, I wasn't getting wound up when I commented about the photos "being common" just making a point that even the ones we've seen before, have never looked this good.

Finding the photo by Seth Tiven of the Ashetons backstage, has to be the coolest shot of them ever. That's what made it for me, finding the rare stuff.

There is a new interview posted online tonight with Iggy & James via Detroit Metro Times.

You mean the photo where the band is suspending him off the ground? If so, I love that shot of James in his leather jock! To me, it shows how completely off the wall and out on their own the band was. Completely unglamorous and more than a little fucked up....yet still ultra cool.

Any idea why he didn't want it in?

Yes, that was the one. Since it has been seen alot, I decided to go with the ones that they look more like the Rolling Stones, Iggy front and center in his favorite junkie sweater.

On yet another note, I think someone here mentioned a "mock" exchange between my cohort Jeffrey Morgan and Mr. Pop about the remix of Raw Power...hardly mock, that took place on an international phone call while we were working on the book. May be Mr. Morgan could weigh in here sometime and share more.

The "Prosecutor Morgan" and "Defendant Pop" and "Global Class Action Lawsuit, The People VS Pop" seems pretty mock to me!! Maybe mock is the wrong word to use. I thought that section was really good and very funny.

Ah, right. MOCK as verb, I thought you meant MOCK as adjective like the turtle soup Frank Sinatra sings about in "I Get A Kick Out Of You" classy word for fake.

Well, by any means we are rectifying Raw Power now with a nice modern remaster of it. So all charges will be dropped against Defendant Pop.

Their next shows, less than ten days later, were at a series of FUNHOUSE record release parties held at Ungano's nightclub in NYC with Roadie Zeke Zettner on bass and"Red Rudy" Cheatham on second guitar. This is on page 49 of your book. If this is the August shows at Ungano's I was there, I was 18 years old at the time, plus I was stoned cold sober and my eyesight and hearing were better than the 57 year old writing this. Where was the second guitar?? There was only one guitarist, that was Ron with scott on drums, Zeke on bass, Steve on sax and Iggy. Ungano's was a very claustrophobic club, the stage itself could just contain the Marshall Stacks and drum kit. Iggy was singing and performing right on top of all of us, wiggle dancing like some demented elf, everyone sitting in the first five rows (floor seating, not chairs) were fair game for Iggy. My friends and myself were sitting about 15 ft. back, dead center from the stage.
The set was the entire Funhouse album minus "Down on the Street" Iggy did a version of "The Shadow of your Smile" We had to split to get back to Jersey before the boys came back to do an encore. My friend Pete saw the Stooges a few months later, in NYC, with a second guitarist, that is probably the Stooges line up you are referring to. In conclusion The August Show I saw at Ungano's had only one guitar player, the late great Ron Asheton.

It is well worth the money. Matheu's history with the band makes this book an invaluable read to any Stooges fan. Great photos and text. I just wish I could have made it to the NYC signing the other day. Maybe Robert will be able to talk Iggy, Scott and James into some more appearances in a couple other cities. With the upcoming release of the Atlanta '73 performance I really hope one of those cities will be Atlanta for a book signing and a show.
